Many of the tribal communities she works with are fiercely matrilineal and handle relationships with a simplicity that puts “modern” society to shame. Instead of dragging out a divorce in the courts for over a decade, they accept that people fall out of love. The transition is marked by a simple trade, usually a goat, a shared meal and total peace.
“This was culture shock for me, that it is so simple... give a goat, have a lunch, and then you move on.”
India’s culture changes every 20 kilometers, and sometimes, the most progressive mindsets are found far outside the city limits.

If a woman is appointed or placed into a position of authority, their deep-rooted respect for the hierarchy kicks in. They might not like that a woman is in charge, but they will respect the chair she sits in, and they will fall in line.
Stop waiting for permission to lead. If you take the seat of power, the hierarchy will protect you.

When it was time to recruit other women to join the fleet, Vandana tried to teach Sujata how to talk about “the larger picture” and “taking up leadership.”
Sujata completely ignored that. Instead, she looked at the women and said: “I have an RO water filter in my house. I have a car and a two-wheeler. Do you get that by sweeping and mopping?”
She skipped the buzzwords and spoke pure, undeniable truth. When you have the results to back it up, you don’t need fancy jargon.
