In my opinion, design is always better when it’s thoughtful and intentional.
So here is my thought process and design breakdown: This hat was clearly inspired by Virginia—but on a more granular level, it’s inspired by Virginia’s license plate.
A lot of people don’t know this, but Virginia is the only state that uses a serif typeface on its standard license plate.
While most states use sans-serif fonts for legibility, Virginia embraces a historical, slightly confusing, yet distinctive look.
I first noticed this after moving away.
Every long drive home, I could always tell how close I was by how often I’d start seeing those Virginia plates.
That’s what I wanted to capture with this hat—that drive home .
Every detail was placed intentionally:
• Green suede brim representing Virginia’s foliage
• Satin green under brim inspired by road signs on drives back to VA
• Full mesh upper representing Virginia’s vast space and breathability
• Full wrap-around design using the Virginia license plate font
• Dogwood flower and branch embroidery inspired by vintage veteran truckers, nodding to Virginia’s military presence
• Dogwood flowers translated directly from the state seal
• Navy blue eyelets and top button referencing the Chesapeake Bay
• Red dogwood flower and state seal embroidered using the states symbolism to help reinforce the story.
A lot of y’all grabbed this hat without realizing you’ve seen it a million times on daily drives —subconsciously. If you caught the design references , shout out to you!
