A brilliant day yesterday hosting the @kssa_youth_sailing Opening Splash at Downs Sailing Club ⛵️
18 DSC cadets took to the water in 16 boats, delivering some fantastic results and bringing home wins for the club, something we’re incredibly proud of.
Conditions kept everyone on their toes, with light and shifty winds alongside a strong tide making it a real test of reading the course, staying patient, and making the most of every bit of pressure. Our cadets handled it superbly.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day happen, on and off the water.
Great racing and great spirit by all!

WELCOME SAILORS – OPENING SPLASH REGATTA 2026
The countdown is on and we’re looking forward to welcoming you all this Saturday 25th April for the first @kssa_youth_sailing regatta of the season at Downs Sailing Club.
Whether you’re a seasoned racer or taking part in your first event, this is a great opportunity to get on the water, build confidence, and kick off the 2026 season. Rookies will have their own fleet, course, and coaches on hand throughout the day.
Event Timings Reminder:
• Arrival from 08:00
• Registration from 08:30
• Sailor Briefing at 09:45 (rigged and ready)
There will be food and drinks available throughout the day.
This regatta is also a key warm-up for the summer season and an opportunity to compete for RYA Junior Championship qualification points.

When Downs weather conditions were not playing ball, we headed over to Westbere Lakes, and what a session it turned out to be!
We were incredibly fortunate to have RYA coach Jake on the water with us, sharing his time, knowledge, and infectious energy with our cadets. From start lines to race decisions, his coaching had everyone thinking sharper, sailing smarter, and loving every minute of it. Days like this are the ones that stick.
This is exactly what being an Royal Yachting Association London & South East Pathway Club is all about. It’s more than training each week, it’s about giving our young sailors access to top-level coaching, building confidence, raising standards, and connecting them to the wider RYA pathway so they can see what’s possible as they progress.

Some exciting news to share from Downs SC 🌊
Our Opening Splash Regatta in April, part of the KSSA calendar, will include a RYA Junior Club Championship qualifying event, with official RYA medals awarded on the day. This will be one part of the regatta, alongside the usual KSSA junior racing for sailors of all abilities.
For the club, being awarded this recognition by the RYA is something we’re really proud of. It’s a national mark of quality that reflects the high standards of our junior sailing, from race management and safety, to the supportive environment created by our members and volunteers.
A huge thank you to all the members, volunteers, coaches and parents who help make this possible. This recognition belongs to the whole Downs SC community. ⛵

✨ A huge congratulations to Julia - winner of the RYA Impact Award! ✨
We couldn’t be prouder to see Julia recognised for the incredible difference she’s made to Downs Sailing Club over more than two decades.
Julia first joined the club through a Learn to Sail course and has been at the heart of Downs ever since. She’s spent years volunteering on the House Committee, including several as Chair, and has supported our Learn to Sail programme while her children, and now her grandchildren, took to the water.
In 2018 she became Vice Commodore and later Commodore, leading the club through the challenges of COVID and helping plan the safe and successful return to sailing. Most recently, Julia and her team masterminded our unforgettable 75th Anniversary Ball, bringing together 150 people for a truly special celebration.
On the water, she’s just as dedicated, crewing for over twenty years with John Cass in the Buzz and RS400, and now helming her Streaker at open meetings and national events.
Julia’s energy, warmth, and commitment embody everything that makes our club community so special. 💙⛵️
The RYA Awards shine a light on the individuals and organisations who give their time, expertise and passion to grow and support boating across the UK, people whose dedication inspires others to get involved.
