I really enjoy building these covers out and playing with form, positive-negative space, and composition of image to type.
The year was 2000. 26 years ago. 9th grade-ish. We spent a lot of time jumping bikes over each other, skateboarding, hanging in trees, on roofs, in ditches, pretending to be newscasters on our own tv shows, starting bands.
Images are still frames from 8mm Sony handicam footage.
Went to Chicago for an author visit. Can't be in the same city as Lynn painter and NOT go to her tour/launch event! Also stopped by @bookloftoakpark and an awesome record store and the @oakparklibrary and @portilloshotdogs and soooo many bakeries and coffee shops. Left monday morning, made the 6 hour drive, left for home Tuesday night. So tired.
Some random photos from Chicago. Misty and I drove up Monday then drove back Tuesday. We talked to a few hundred kids about Play Like A Girl and did some workshops on making Graphic Novels, ate hot dogs with Big Tub and Big Train, drank way too much coffee, paid way too many tolls, saw Lynn Painter, and debated if what the youth call "emo" is actually emo for three hours to stay awake on the drive home.
I asked what I should draw in my sketchbook and the answer was an overwhelming want for cats. You guys love cats. It was 80 percent some sort of cat answer. Also... Death metal cats. So, I put some metal in there with some skulls and death which makes for one happy cat.

I fell in love with Matt's work years ago on his series LONG LOST. It was eerie and beautifully drawn by artist Lisa Sterle. When I read LOVING, OHIO (the graphic novel he made with Sam Beck) I instantly connected with it—Ohio, creepiness, the music scene, cult vibes, and mystery. So, it was really special to get a blurb from a fellow Ohio native making great work.
