My latest hewing axe and how I split the offset handle out from an ash log with a distinct curve at its base. It had been drying in my shop for years- should be able to get one more good offset handle out of it. Before I have to go back to steam bending. Just sayin’.

I had the pleasure of making a hammer for the tremendously talented and prolific Italian smith Antonino Versaci coltelli_siciliani_versaci (seriously go check out his traditional Sicilian folding knives, they’re gorgeous!). He recently sent me these pictures. That last one is going to be a replica of an ancient folding knife that was 72 cm long!! (That’s about 28” for those of us still using Standard)
It’s very gratifying to make tools that other craftsmen use in their own work.

So I recently realized that my phone was almost out of space- turned out the vast majority of my data was pictures of work (shocker, I know). What can I say? I find pictures of glowing semi-finished projects set against the backdrop of an untidy blacksmith’s shop really appealing. What kind of photos do you have way too many of?

Follow up on the harpoon video- one of these we twisted up the shank (like several original examples recovered from stricken whales) it was very pleased with the sculptural result we achieved.
