Wood firing is magic. The entire process connects us back thousands of years to our foundation as clay artists and the results!!! Each piece comes out with a story about its journey with fire and the colours and crystals and flashing and ash deposits…
My wine cup last night and coffee cup this morning made by @dougcasebeer and loaded into the kiln @pintopottery during last workshop. The sun caught the surface while washing and reminded me about the complexity that can come with only one glaze applied onto the surface of a bone dry pot made during workshop and fired with wood.
Best with a team for sure. 30 hours of wood every few minutes is too grueling for me to manage. Workshop is perfect. Everyone who wants to, gets a 4 hour shift ( or two) … early shifts are cool and easy and later ones there’s manual labour moving a volume of wood and the heat is extrodinary!
Orrange wood is cut and in a mountain at studio waiting to stack! Looking forward to having you all here soon with @gisellehicks !
Sunday vibe! Front “ production” varanda cast and watered today while the family got the last rafters up on the river side! Plan is to cast this side tomorrow. ..
.
Thanks @dougcasebeer who’s here in Jamaica with me working hard this week - special time! Thanks to everyone who donated work for the auction, @oberman.jill for organizing and all of you who bid for pieces and others who generously sent donations for this reconstruction!
.
The same footprint is being fundamentally transformed and feeling GOOD! Excited to share with some of you in May, international workshop wit @gisellehicks
Join Giselle and Doug for a week-long workshop in Giselle’s spacious studio in Helena, Montana. The power company was finally seen planting new poles near studio and so we’re hopeful to have power back before the 3 Month mark.
I haven’t made work since the storm. My longest break since starting to build the studio in 1992. We put all our energy first into clearing the debris. We had 2 big trucks and uncountable wheelbarrows from within our small studio grounds ( 180 big trucks full from around Good Hope main buildings plus continuous trailer loads dumped by tractor). No Power yet but things are stable. Studio production is happening and gas kiln is firing with glaze production in the main chamber and a bisque firing in the back chamber.
We are using the opportunity to re-evaluate studio and build back better. My clay family has generously offered to help by planing this fundraising auction and generously contributing a piece of their art. ALL ART WILL BE POSTED HERE.
.
Please consider biding on any or all of these beautiful works posted.

SUPPORT JAMAICA CLAY RECOVERY AUCTION · Ellen Shankin · “Red Stoneware Vase” · 9 x 6” · Retail value: $180 · starting bid: $75 USD
From Ellen:
Anderson Ranch has played a big role in my life. I taught at the ranch in Colorado many summers. And then I had the great opportunity to be part of the clay family in Jamaica.
David Pinto and Doug Casebeer ran a strong wonderful program at Good Hope. I have tons of memories of my time there. Great studio. Beautiful location. Incredible meals together and a terrific group of students.
I hope you will consider purchasing a piece from among the many potters contributing to the auction. Let’s raise some money to repair all of the damage from the storm and bring the Jamaica program back to the ceramic community.
