Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lamb drew upon a crocodile and a tarantula to inform his character.
Animal exercises can help you add depth to the characters you are portraying. If there are aspects you feel are lacking in your performance, choose an animal you imagine to have the qualities you need to enhance your work. Observe YouTube videos of the animal or head to the zoo to observe in person. Take note as to how the animal moves and the sounds they make to communicate. Then in the privacy of your own space start to “do” the animal full out. Get some props ie food and toys and interact as the animal would. Imagine you are in the natural habitat of your chosen animal and explore. Once you have a sense of the animal in your body bring it down in size until you are on two feet and subtly incorporating the animal’s imagined characteristics into your performance. If someone is acting with you or watching you and can still see the “giraffe” or “monkey” in your performance you have not finished your prep. The origin of your character qualities are your secret. Don’t share it with your fellow actors so they aren’t distracted looking for the elements of the animal you have used.
