4 years ago in january me and zin booked the first show at our house. then covid spiked and pushed the grand opening to march. now, 40+ shows later, we get to celebrate the anniversary of maybe the most important project I have ever been involved in. at the end of the month I'm moving out of this beautiful house. this is likely to be its last show, and with some really special people.
words will not contain what I owe to my friends for making this space matter. for hand-carving stamps for every band for every show. for running door, for spotting darts, for carrying beer, for introducing themselves, for explaining everything on the walls, for giving directions to slices and flipping off the PPA.
thank you to the artists who filled this place with music, comedy, puppetry, theater, and applause. thank you for going along with the gimmick, stripping and sharing your craft, and sticking around to discuss the results.
thank you to the audience, the regulars, the curious, the fixtures of our inner and outer circles. your support, for me and for the music, is entirely vital to everything any of us do.
the kitchenette will return somehow. maybe in a new space, maybe even back here with a different arrangement. but I continue to believe that hosting is a necessity like no other. to the extent that a cohesive scene can be drawn around what we do together, what do the letters DIY stand for if not skin in the fucking game. if not open homes, shared food and drink, borrowed guitars, no one turned away for lack of funds. are we doing this ourselves? doing it together? are we worried about draw? setting a radius? charging 12 online and 15 at the door? 'the house is closed but we know the bar's email address!'
we're all in it for different reasons. that's cool. but if you're in it, don't just champion art when it doesn't involve beer on your own floor. when you can shoot a few dms and take a cut. share what you have. ask for what you don't. ask questions. listen to and thank each other. we all wanna make shit that matters. and we are all so so lucky when we can. give each other that space.
thank you, I love you
