It’s not what you think - Hybrid publishing is an alternative path for authors to get their books out in the world. Independent hybrid presses, like Double-Edged Press, are very selective about what they publish. We don’t just anyone willing to pay for a publishing package. *TIP if someone says they’re a hybrid but the selection process was quick and they publish A TON of books every year, that may be a red flag for authors. They may actually be a vanity press, which you want to avoid. Hybrid’s have been around for 10+ years and offer a lot of mutual benefits to authors and publishing houses. And we follow the Independent Book Publishers Association’s criteria for hybrid presses ✅ 1️⃣ Authors get higher royalties, typically up to 70%. But with us, you get 85% 2️⃣ Authors have more creative control 3️⃣ You still work with a professional team that, hopefully, offers traditional book distribution channels We are authors and artists aiming to put power back into authors’ hands in an industry where big companies rake in the profits and writers get scraps. Why do we give our authors higher royalties than many other independent presses? The answer is pretty simple to us. It’s your work and you should be fairly paid for it. Traditional publishers may give a small or medium advance to the author over 2-3 installments. After the 10% to your agent (rightfully so) and taxes, authors aren’t left with much but still need to earn the full amount back with book sales before they can make any more money from their book. And even then, authors are still only making 10-20% royalties depending on their contract. Our authors invest in the publishing of their novel. They don’t owe us anything else and immediately begin earning back their investment. We only take 15% of each net sale because we are invested in the continued success of your book and use returns toward future marketing for your title. Financial freedom for authors. Financial independence for publishers. A model that mutually benefits all parties and allows us to publish more interesting and riskier books.
