Here is the first in use case of our new typeface Dote. It shows its starting point from almost 4 years ago. Born as a custom typeface created for @dote_textiles , a Milan-based hand-weaving collective active since 2022, Dote has been in use for quite some years already. Run by @calageewhiz , @elena.meneghini and @giuliapils , Dòte is a workshop dedicated to the production of fabrics and textile objects, a space committed to the study and teaching of hand-weaving, and a research platform focused on textile culture in the broadest sense. Dòte’s visual identity, curated by @galluzzo.michele in collaboration with Meneghini, is based on our custom typeface designed inspired by the rediscovery of the Svezia alphabet by Xilografia di Verona in the first half of the twentieth century. The resulting font Dote is now available on @futurefonts – link in bio.

We are happy to share some pictures of our event and exhibition SOTTO MANO @dote_textiles last month. Rooted in different practices but united by a shared belief in the importance of understanding materials from the ground up, we—Julia Villamonte (@fili__fili__ ) and Vera Roggli (@ve_ro_studio )—came together during Milan Design Week to share our ongoing research into natural fibers. Hosted by @dote_textiles (Caroline Donaldson, Elena Meneghini and Giulia Pils), SOTTO MANO offered a space for exchange—between fibers, people, and stories. Our study draws from often overlooked plants that grow within reach across the Philippines, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium. Places that are deeply connected to our roots and the geographies where we currently live and work, allowing us to reconnect material to place, process, and purpose. We presented a video projection tracing parts of our fiber extraction and weaving processes, accompanied by material samples and objects that invited touch and prompted conversation. Visitors also shared memories, knowledge, and techniques—some drawn from their own experiences with the very plants we work with. It was a meditation on slowness and attention – the act of truly knowing the materials we choose to work with. Grazie mille to everyone who passed by and made this gathering meaningful.
