“Bella Ciao” is a blind phrase - not referencing a person, but a feeling. It doesn’t conjure a face; it evokes an emotion. It’s a farewell that invites rather than repels. It is hopeful.
I see oil paint and pastel colors embodying an idealistic 1800s street scene. The same way the phrase is blind, the boy in the artwork has an ambiguous face. Leave it to the youthful imagination to decide what could occupy the void in the image or why the almost obtrusive distortion exists just below.
But one cannot see music just like they cannot “see” what would exist underneath the veils covering the character’s figure. That is what keeps them looking. That is what keeps them listening.
