🧐 Serious question, do you think fashion should be considered STEM? And if so, why do you think it’s portrayed to be such a glamorous profession?

When learning how to sew, you have to be okay with becoming a life long student šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚ BUT I will say these 5 books definitely helped me along the way! The foundational books are what I used in fashion school but the 2 others REALLY helped me translate the basics onto my curvier body! šŸ™ŒšŸ½šŸ’• Do you have any fashion books that you recommend? Please leave them in the comments šŸ™šŸ½ I’d love to check them out!! šŸ˜‡

šŸ˜… Don’t hate me for saying this because I 100% believe fashion is art šŸ˜šŸ™ŒšŸ½ but I do think it should still have SOME rules so it doesn’t lose its function. 🄓 idk, is that a hot take? lol In this example, I’m showing how two different structures create two completely different design possibilities. On the left, I placed the boning on the outside (fashion fabric layer). On the right, I placed the boning on the inside (lining layer). Both are beautiful 🄰🄹 but I think they tell two different stories. When the structure is on the outside, the art IS the structure. The boning channels become the focus. But when the structure is on the inside, the outside becomes a blank canvas. You can explore, layer, and add embellishment šŸ˜šŸŒøšŸ’• WITHOUT the interruption of the boning underneath. 🄹 I loved seeing so many corsets on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala. So many exposed and hidden structures that felt like art in completely different ways. But I’m curious… do you prefer seeing all the craftsmanship exposed, or do you like a more hidden, seamless finish? šŸ‘€

šŸ˜… Over 10 years of sewing and I’ll admit it… going the extra mile on your muslin will in fact make your life easier šŸ˜‚āœØESPECIALLY if you have curves and here’s why. In this video, I’m wearing the exact same corset. The ONLY difference? One has boning… and one doesn’t. When I first started sewing, I probably would’ve skipped the boning. That’s what we did in school. We’d just pin it to the form and check the fit. But the truth is, a dress form is not a human body. (It’s really close to resembling one!) But your body is soft. It has organs! It moves. It has volume. Gravity is doing its thing šŸ˜‚ And with garments like corsets, support changes EVERYTHING. If I stopped at the unboned sample, I would’ve thought my pattern was completely off. Too much fabric under the bust, pulling at the waist… a mess. I would’ve shortened the bust, widened the waist… and ruined the fit. But once I added the boning? Everything sat exactly where it was supposed to so that I could truly assess the fit✨ No extra adjustments needed. Just proper support. And that’s the part nobody tells you, sometimes it’s not your pattern… you just haven’t given the garment the structure it needs yet. I know going that extra step can feel tedious 😩 But it will save you from over-correcting and doing a whole lot of unnecessary work later. Support isn’t optional in corsetry… it’s the foundation. ✨ Hehe with that said though, there are a few tweaks I made like expanding for more room in the hips. Stick around if you want to see how I decided on that!
