We keep asking how much time teens are spending on AI, but Dr. Sema Sgaier, founder of Surgo Health, says that's the wrong question. Her research shows that how teens use AI is a reflection of their lives, not a uniform cause for alarm: → 1 in 10 use it to upskill for jobs and education (often teens from lower-income backgrounds and black youth). → 1 in 10 use it to find community and connection they can't access offline (often Hispanic youth). → 1 in 10 avoid it entirely, worried about privacy and safety (often LGBTQ+ youth). Three groups. Three very different needs. One technology, and in every case, the relationship with a trusted adult makes all the difference. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #AIandYouth #YouthMentalHealth #ADoseOfOptimism #SurgoHealth #DigitalHealth #HealthEquity #TeenWellBeing #ChildrensHealth

When a teenager says they don't belong, what are they really telling us? Dr. Kristine Gloria, founder of YoungFutures @youngfuturesorg , says it's one of the most developmentally important signals we can receive from a young person. Belonging isn't just a feeling. For teens, it's how they understand who they are. Today they're trying to find it in multiple places at once, their town, their school, their feed, their group chats, while managing what it even means to belong in each one. That's a lot for anyone to navigate. Let alone a teenager. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #YouthMentalHealth #TeenBelonging #ADoseOfOptimism #YoungFutures #DigitalWellbeing #ChildrensHealth #TeenMentalHealth #HealthEquity

Vaccine misinformation doesn't spread because people are anti-science. It spreads because trusted voices aren't in the room. Judy Klein, founder of Unity Consortium @unityconsortium , is putting them there, training 10,000 young people and 1,500 adult mentors to become trusted health ambassadors in their own communities. Not just with facts. With the skills to have empathetic, non-defensive conversations with people who don't agree. Because knowledge alone doesn't change minds, trusted relationships do. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #VaccineAdvocacy #HPVVaccine #TeenHealth #ADoseOfOptimism #UnityConsortium #VaccineHesitancy #ChildrensHealth #HealthEquity

Maternal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa is 100 times higher than in Europe. One of the biggest gaps driving that statistic? Women often don't know when something is wrong in their pregnancy, until it's too late. Dr. Lorraine Muluka, founder of Malaika @malaica_official , is closing that gap with a care model that meets mothers where they already are: on WhatsApp, connected to an AI that answers questions around the clock, a nurse midwife, and a community of women going through the same journey at the same time. Continuous support, not episodic care. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #MaternalHealth #GlobalHealth #ADoseOfOptimism #Malaika #AfricanMaternalHealth #HealthEquity #DigitalHealth #ChildrensHealth

When the Syrian war began, Shadi Martini didn't wait for permission to help. He built secret clinics, he smuggled medical supplies, and created an underground network of physicians reaching people the system had abandoned. In 2012, the network was discovered. He had to flee, but he kept working. Today, as CEO of Multifaith Alliance (@multifaithaid ), Shadi reaches communities across Syria, Gaza, Ukraine, Guatemala, Iraq, and Lebanon, deliberately seeking out the air-gap areas too dangerous or remote for most organizations to go. His is one of the most extraordinary stories of resilience you'll hear. Please tune in and listen to the full episode, his journey from refugee to humanitarian leader is one that will stay with you. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #HumanitarianAid #RefugeeHealth #GlobalHealth #ADoseOfOptimism #MultifaithAlliance #ChildrensHealth #HealthEquity #SyrianRefugees

10% of people have been affected by premature birth. More than a million children die from it every year. And for every one degree of body temperature lost, the risk of mortality increases by 28%. James Roberts, co-founder and CEO of mOm Incubators (@momincubators ), set out to solve this with a design engineering student's final project: a collapsible, inflatable neonatal incubator that folds down, ships anywhere, and deploys wherever it's needed. 15,000 patients across seven countries so far, and counting. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #NICUInnovation #PrematureBabies #GlobalHealth #ADoseOfOptimism #mOmIncubators #NeonatalCare #HealthcareInnovation #ChildrensHealth

Not long ago, if a child had epilepsy and a normal MRI, genetic testing was a last resort. Something to consider when everything else had been ruled out. Dr. Sucheta Joshi, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (@childrensla ), has watched that change entirely. Today, a genetic test doesn't just give a family an answer. It guides which treatments to use, which to avoid, and what to expect, framing a child's epilepsy in a much broader context than a diagnosis alone ever could. From last resort to first step. That's how far the field has come. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #PediatricEpilepsy #GeneticTesting #PediatricNeurology #ADoseOfOptimism #CHLA #ChildrensHealth #PrecisionMedicine #HealthcareInnovation

Half of kids in the US don't have easy access to healthcare. Only 14% of ERs are equipped to handle pediatric visits well. The pediatrician shortage is projected to reach 15,000 to 20,000 by 2036. For families in rural America, the nearest option may be hours away, so the ear infection gets ignored. The developmental question goes unasked, and the small thing becomes a bigger thing. Dr. Lyndsey Garbi (lyndseygarbimd), co-founder of Blueberry Pediatrics (@blueberrypediatrics ), is meeting those families at home, with a board-certified pediatrician available whenever they need one. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #PediatricTelehealth #RuralHealth #HealthEquity #ADoseOfOptimism #BlueberryPediatrics #PediatricHealthcare #ChildrensHealth #DigitalHealth

A thyroid biopsy takes about five minutes. But in a pediatric hospital, that five-minute procedure can require a full anesthesia team, 60 to 90 minutes of resources, and a child who hasn't eaten in 12 hours. Dr. Joseph Miller, Interventional Radiologist at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (@childrensla ), started asking whether there was another way. The answer was virtual reality, used to manage anxiety and discomfort during certain procedures, so that some patients can stay awake and skip anesthesia entirely. What started with thyroid biopsies has grown into a program that now reaches patients who would otherwise have had nowhere to go. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #VRinHealthcare #PediatricHealthcare #ADoseOfOptimism #CHLA #HealthcareInnovation #PediatricRadiology #VirtualReality #ChildrensHealth

In a hospital, children lose control over almost everything. When their medication arrives, when doctors come in, what treatment they're getting - what happens next? Nicole Albers, art therapist and program lead at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (@childrensla ), gives some of it back, one small decision at a time. White paper or colored paper? Markers or colored pencils? A story about a brave little mouse? A custom lullaby made from Mom's Spotify playlist? It sounds simple, but for a hospitalized child, those moments of choice add up to something real. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #ArtTherapy #MusicTherapy #PediatricHealthcare #ADoseOfOptimism #CHLA #ChildrensHealth #HealingArts #FamilyCenteredCare

Every day, patients call because they need care, and too often, no one picks up. Matt Willis, Co-Founder of Attuned Intelligence, is starting with the most basic problem in healthcare access (the unanswered phone) and building from there. A multilingual AI voice agent that handles 100% of inbound calls from day one. No long IT implementation. No EHR integration required to start. At one hospital in New England, they were live within weeks and already automating toward 70% of call volume. Because faster access to care shouldn't depend on whether someone was available to answer the phone. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #HealthcareAI #PatientAccess #HealthEquity #ADoseOfOptimism #VoiceAI #FQHCs #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth

There's no blood test for ADHD, no MRI, no simple diagnostic tool. Diagnosing a child requires a trained specialist, validated questionnaires, and input from at least two settings, usually school and home. For millions of families, that process alone can take months, or never happen at all. Dr. Alesandro Larrazabal, co-founder of Clarity Pediatrics (@clarity.pediatrics ), shares how his team is working to change that, building a multidisciplinary telehealth model that works alongside the pediatricians who already know these kids, and brings the right specialists to families who can't otherwise reach them. 🎧 Full episode link in bio. #ADHD #PediatricBehavioralHealth #HealthEquity #ADoseOfOptimism #Telehealth #PediatricHealthcare #ChronicCareGap #ChildrensHealth
