Keys to Kyrgyzstan -
Day one landing in Bishkek, my brother and I became the proud owners of a 1989 Запоро́жец 968, possibly the cheapest and worst built car in existence.
Unlike Volkswagen, known as Das Auto Für das volk (the car for the people).
Locals quickly let us know that our humble Запоро́жец was known as Автомобиль для инвалидов (car for the disabled).
A blue, air-cooled hunk of thin metal lucky to hit 80 km/hr downhill and get you somewhere between A and B, definitely not A or B.
Still, we pointed it towards 4000km of the most diverse, mountainous and breathtaking country sides on the planet. Isolated tracks that would usually produce hurdles for a modern 4x4. Where the only help is either a bunch of railroad workers in the distance or the stray goat and eagle overhead. Both of which involved communicating with no English. Just pointing at broken bits of metal, and exchanging food/ cigarettes for a chance to get us moving again.
-Breakdowns: Daily.
-Destinations: Changed hourly.
-Sights: Enjoyed consistently.
It’s parked up in back Bishkek if you want to partake on the roady of your life.
