While the vacuum cleaner was running, pieces of euro notes that had been torn by hand were held near the end of the tube. He studied sculpture at Kanazawa College of Art and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Rita McBride, where he completed his studies as a Meisterschüler. Working across sculpture, drawing, painting, and performance, Arakawa develops collaborative projects that engage bodily presence and movement. A distinctive aspect of his practice is the application of choreographic methodologies to spatial composition, resulting in what he calls “performance scores.” These works function both as visual elements within exhibitions and as blueprints for live performance. His work has been presented at institutions including Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Kunsthalle Münster, Haus Esters, and Cabaret Voltaire. In 2024, he held the solo exhibition AKECHAN at Schlosstheater Moers. He will present a live performance at the opening reception. After studying fine arts, stage design, and sculpture in Stuttgart, he moved to Tokyo in 1994, where he has since focused on public art projects, installations, and land art. He has taught media art and sculpture at Musashino Art University and California State University, Long Beach, and currently teaches at Tama Art University. In 1996, he received the Kajima Sculpture Prize, and in 2005 he was selected for the Benesse Prize by Tadao Ando. His works and exhibitions include Tokyo Midtown, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, the 1st Yokohama Triennale, and Mode Gakuen Nagoya. Her work explores natural forms, language, and perception, using painting, objects, and photomontage to preserve everyday moments as “specimens” while reflecting on self-perception. She has exhibited at Museum Haus Lange, Museum Schloss Moyland, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Mitsuko Castle Museum, and Schloss Spherie Exhibition Hall, among others. Her works are held in the collections of the New York Public Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Library of Luxembourg, and the Klingspor Museum. 【Projektsbeschreibung】 Diese Ausstellung bildet den Abschluss des dreijährigen internationalen Wanderausstellungsprojekts „DOPPELPASS – Ich verpackt im Koffer“, das Deutschland (Münster), Litauen (Kaunas)und Japan (Nishiaizu) miteinander verbindet. Die Ausstellung „DOPPELPASS – Ich verpackt im Koffer“, “ widmet sich den Erfahrungen von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, die in einem fremden Land leben, und thematisiert ihre grenzüberschreitenden Identitäten sowie die damit verbundenen kulturellen Spannungen und Transformationen. Deutsche Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die in Japan leben, sowie japanische Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die seit mehr als zehn Jahren in Deutschland tätig sind, setzen sich mit Themen wie Migration, Erinnerung, Sprache und kulturelle Grenzen auseinander. Die Präsentation in Nishiaizu (Präfektur Fukushima) zielt darauf ab, die lokale Identität in den Dialog einzubringen und neue Formen von Austausch und Beziehung zwischen den Kulturen zu fördern.
