Yesterday was a blast! I sang in Leeton for the Leeton Shire Council at the pool. Out of the 30 odd songs that I sang the last one blew everyone away and even made one lady cry.
I sang Bapa by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. It was a song that was played at my father's funeral in 2009. It's special to me because Gurrumul wrote this song for his dad. I dedicated this song to Aunty.
I sang in traditional Yolngu language. WOW! Goosebumps, cold shivers and all.
My Aunty Bon was supposed to be there with me today. We only talked last week and she was so excited about coming over to Leeton to do a talk on Survival Day and to watch me singβ€π€ππ£ I think she was there. I could feel her when I sang . She is one of the reasons why my connection to culture is strong π₯ β€ππ€π£
Aunty Veronica Collins was a strong and quite possibly the strongest Wiradjuri woman I have ever known. So much passion, power and tenacity. She never ever gave up on the struggles our people face today.
Love you Aunty. We will carry your legacy. Fly high In the dreaming. R.I.P.
Please take the time out to listen to my take on this haunting, mystical and beautiful song by Gurrumul, also taken too early.
First gig with Shane on Saturday for the Hillston Swans AFL and Netball club. It was a blast.
