THE DON. @donteeezzy was the first artist @gallimdanceco i got to know. makes sense. one of the first exchanges we ever shared was him affirming my vulnerability on social media. instant friend. lol or so i thought quietly in the back of my mind, that here was someone whose energy felt aligned. who point blank was like, "i see you." and then i learned he grew up on an island (o'ahu) and moved around a bunch growing up. if it's not entirely easy, or if it doesn't make conventional sense, or if it messes with traditional categories when explaining where you're from.. strong chances you will find a friend in me. that third culture kid type energy resonates. figuring things out, getting shit done. default creatively moving— or dancing through.. nah, *with life. the way he moves feels all his own, like every artist at gallim does. there's been so many instances seeing him move with expression that's made me go.. wow that was fckin beautiful. gets me all goosebump giddy like i just witnessed a once in a lifetime phenomena. getting to know donteezy, to be supported by him (especially during that dance intensive), and getting to witness his energy and try capturing it, has been and will continue to be such a gift.

the beloved @donteeezzy in wonderland x @gallimdanceco@thejoycetheater
cover photo is one of my favorite shots from this. mostly cause i caught it by accident and didn't even realize this was a moment until i saw it during the day of the dress rehearsal. with everyone walking in a crowd going the opposite direction, donteezy staring into the audience in the midst of it all is a detail that could be easily missed. iirc, as i was shooting and following the herd of dancers (certainly a prevalent theme in this piece, which in an interestingly meta way even i as a photographer became mesmerized by and led to follow the movements of that herd/mass..which speaks to the magnetic flows and energetic affectivity of andrea's choreography) and as i was looking through the camera viewfinder to find someone to focus on, through the crowd i noticed donteezy there, breathing heavily, eyes staring right into my soul lol. locking camera focus on his eyes, i snapped the fck away knowing i had just captured some magic. so many moments like this are scattered throughout the complex choreography by @andreamiller_gallim and makes me wonder how many more hidden gems i may have missed. which is why, again, i keep returning to this world of gallim.
