Lucienne Camille, 1975 🍒
Known as the face of reggae, Lucienne Camille never actually visited Jamaica, she never even set foot in the Caribbean. She was born in Kent, southeast London, though some accounts place her origins in the Seychelles islands. The truth remains unclear. She rose to fame in Europe as a showgirl and erotic film actress, but her image traveled much further.
Alongside her work in burlesque, she modeled, and those photographs ended up on reggae album sleeves across the 1970s and 80s. For generations of Jamaicans, she became the visual language of the genre. She was paid, but never credited. Anonymous, yet everywhere. Her face has now been identified on at least 30 different records.
