Peoples Free food , black and grey color pencils on paper , 2026 In 1969, the Black Panther Party launched community ‘Survival Programs,’ including free food distribution and the Free Breakfast for Children Program. These efforts fed thousands of families and highlighted the need for government-funded school meal programs.

( Top piece ) needle purse, black , grey and dark grey on marigold paper attached to hard-stock paper , 2025 ( Bottom piece ) The people’s clinic room 1 , black , grey and dark grey on marigold paper attached to hard-stock paper , 2025 ( next slide piece ) Lincoln detox people’s program , black , grey and dark grey on marigold paper attached to hard-stock paper , 2025 Some food for thought needle purse - The black panther discovered acupuncture between 1970 - 1972 to counteract drug addiction in their community’s. In 1972 BPP’s China trip including former member Dr. Tolbert Small, Inspired by China’s “barefoot doctors,” Small learned acupuncture there and brought that knowledge home to use in community health care and pain/addiction treatment. Acupuncture was effective because it eased pain, stress, and withdrawal without creating chemical dependency offering accessible, community-based healing where the system failed. Lincoln detox people’s program - Lincoln Detox was a revolutionary drug treatment program founded in 1970 at Lincoln Hospital, offering acupuncture as a community-based alternative to herion, and other drug’s. This was all led by the BPP, Young Lords, and Mutulu Shakur. Now why was this method so effective and why was it a threat to the corrupt system that still is active now ? Acupuncture was effective because it helped people reduce pain, withdrawal, and addiction without creating dependency. Black Panther members like Dr. Tolbert Small and Mutulu Shakur emphasized teaching the practice to build community self-reliance—challenging a system that profited from addiction and neglected poor healthcare. See when you create community that can thrive independently it will mostly expose and break down system.

Top piece ) BPP Ambulance truck , black, dark and light grey color pencil on marigold press paper attach to black hard hard-stock paper, 2026 ( bottom piece ) peoples free health center , black, dark and light grey color pencil on marigold press paper attach to black hard hard-stock paper, 2026 Food for Thought: The Black Panther Party was not simply a group of individuals dressed in black carrying rifles to patrol their neighborhoods. After months of research while producing work centered on the Black Panther Party movement, I learned that the way the system portrayed them was deeply incomplete. This time around, my focus was on how the Black Panther Party shifted public health for their people and for communities that struggled under the same oppressive systems. Their survival programs addressed gaps left by an inadequate and discriminatory healthcare system. Black Panther Party Free Ambulance Service In 1970, the death of 15-year-old Alan Dandy exposed the cruelty of the healthcare system when a county ambulance refused to transport his body. In response to this injustice and the racism embedded in public services, the Black Panther Party established its own free ambulance service in 1971. The service was fully operated by members of the Party who had received training in EMT procedures and first aid. It was created not for profit, but out of necessity—to ensure dignity, care, and timely medical attention for their community. Franklin Lynch People’s Free Health Center From 1969 to 1975, the Franklin Lynch People’s Free Health Center—along with many other clinics—was part of the Black Panther Party’s Survival Programs. These clinics were created to serve the community directly, offering care where the healthcare system had failed. Services ranged from basic first aid and blood pressure testing to screenings for diabetes and cancer. The clinics were staffed by licensed doctors, medical professionals from various fields, and trained community volunteers, all working together to provide free and accessible healthcare.
