August 19th of 2009, we were producing concerts at Local’s Only on the regular, and we hosted a doubleheader #Laundromatinee day with both @bodiesofwater and #PortOBrien. L.A. based quartet led by husband/wife duo, David and Meredith Metcalf created catchy, melodic songs that were a mix of gospel, post-punk and 60’s pop. “If I Were A Bell” from their 2008 sophomore @secretlycanadian release “A Certain Feeling.” Produced by @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Recorded and mixed by @superduperstepdad Filmed and edited by @dfellegy #bodiesofwater #secretlycanadian

@nicoleatkins opened for @theblackkeys at @whiteriverstprk Lawn in 2011, a sold-out @mokbpresents co-promotion, and she agreed to a little pre-show jaunt over to the Canal for a #Laundromatinee session. Known for powerful, bluesy songs that would showcase her deep and stunning vocal range, she pounded out this perfect solo acoustic rendition of “My Baby Don’t Lie” for us, and showcased why the Canal should have dedicated busking stages for residents to enjoy at least every weekend. “A sound that mixes the weepy, swaying balladry of Roy Orbison and the blues-rock of Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith.” - @nytimes “She has a huge, rangy voice flecked with soul that sounds great atop broken-bottle slide blues.” - @latimes Produced by @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Filmed and edited by @dfellegy Recorded and mixed by @superduperstepdad #NicoleAtkins #nicoleatkinsandtheblacksea

I still laugh at the visuals for our #Laundromatinee sessions, from the project’s earliest days, in the Pendleton Heights High School classrooms. We were just so happy to get them on film. I was always so impressed with @blogotheque and @blackcabsessions and @yourstrulycreative for having some artistic vision when it came to video. The idea of filming mini-movies with bands…wow!…but that doesn’t make me any less proud of us. Anyway, I digress… Singer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Rolf-Carlos Klausener / @rolfcarlos of @theacorn aged like a fine wine. Go take a look! 😍 His songs - also still amazing! Seriously, I loved this band. I loved this album, “Glory Hope Mountain” - released by @paperbagrecords in 2007 was considered for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize, and most deservedly so. “Crooked Legs” was just one of many standouts on the album. “Rolf Klausener and his fellow Ottowans make songs that ache like epics without forcing it. It can take hours of repeated listens to hear how much Glory accomplishes... but it eventually sinks in much deeper than most of the indie-folk it might seem to resemble at first.” - @theonion Recorded and mixed by @superduperstepdad Filmed and edited by @twilsbach Produced by @craigdodgelile and #MyOldKentuckyBlog

Back in 2008, getting @theavettbrothers in for a #Laundromatinee session, on the upswing from “Emotionalism” was such a thrill. What we didn’t know, at the time, was they were going to unleash a new track from their upcoming major label debut album, “I And Love And You,” almost a full year before its release, and then ask us to sit on it until the album’s release! It was exhilarating, and it was torture. “Laundry Room” was the big fish we landed that day, but this one - “Telling Time” was pretty great as well. “Telling Time” was an early, unreleased song the band frequently performed live between 2007-2008. It was later released in 2012 on the album “The Carpenter” as “Pretty Girl from Michigan.” @pastemagazine later named “I And Love And You” the best album of 2009, calling it an “overpowering acoustic album brimming with sadness and soul”. Throughout their first four albums, Brit-rock band Supergrass developed a reputation for rambunctious, brash and bratty glitter-rock, but “Road To Rouen” marked a change. Tempos slowed a bit. Reviews were mixed on the idea of the band @supergrasshq , as humans, maturing, but the band sonically maturing produced an album that ended up being a real treat. Sometimes different isn’t better or worse, it’s just different. “St. Petersburg” was the album opener and lead single to introduce the shift. Recording sessions with your favorite bands could sometimes be like buying a lottery ticket. Rarely did we ever try and influence what songs were performed, so when you did get to capture one of your absolute favorites, it felt like a big win and such a joyous moment. Moving out of the WEEM radio station at Pendleton Heights High School, and taking the sessions mobile, presented so many new (and mostly fun) challenges. Finding a place to host the session was occasionally a stress, and in this case, back in January of 2009, I had to welcome Tony Dekker / @great_lake_swimmers into my then home to record. Honestly, I was nervous, letting artists that I admired into my home, risking judgement, asking them to get comfortable and perform their music, but then we all just sorta fell into it and had a lot of fun. The backdrop felt weird to me, but I just got to record “Your Rocky Spine” in my then living room! “The bands songs alternately rise and fall, prickle and soften, offering a comforting yet stirring refuge from the daily grind.” – @washingtonpost Produced by @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Recorded and Mixed by @superduperstepdad Filmed and Edited by @dfellegy

Alex Brown Church brought his @seawolfmusic project, in three-piece format, to @thepopmachine for a #Laundromatinee session in 2009. The trio gave us an intimate afternoon full of vivid poetic narratives and warm orchestration. My favorite from the session was this rendition of “You’re A Wolf” from his 2007 album “Leaves In The River,” released by @dangerbirdrecords Produced by @superduperstepdad and @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Filmed and edited by @dfellegy Recorded and mixed by @indieric and @neve1073 #seawolf #indie #alexbrownchurch

Seattle musician @tiny_vipers released her sophomore album, “Life On Earth,” through @subpop back in 2009. It was well-received, with outlets praising her captivating, hypnotic melodies as well as the use of space within her songs. The songs were vulnerable, bare, meditative, seemingly fragile, but still brought forth a poweful emotional impact. The vision, filming and editing style of @nkaramanski , who joined our #Laundromatinee team for only a very short while, melded perfectly with singer Jesy Fortino’s sonic aesthetic to create this session. “She’s not telling stories; she’s after incantation and trance.” - @nytimes “A sense of lack and loss, and of the power of all things absent and missing and distant, surges through Fortino’s follow-up, Life On Earth.” - @pitchfork Produced by @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog and @dfellegy Recorded and mixed by @superduperstepdad Filmed and edited by @nkaramanski #tinyvipers #indie #subpop

In 2009, touring behind their “Earth To The Dandy Warhols” release, @thedandywarhols stopped in for a #Laundromatinee session at @thepopmachine studio before their gig at @thevogueindy that evening. You can see and probably feel, in the video, that it was a very relaxed session, and it yielded this slowed and stripped-down rendition of the anthemic kiss-off track, and @veronicamars opening theme song, “We Used To Be Friends,” from 2003’s @capitolrecords album “Welcome To The Monkey House.” Produced by @superduperstepdad and @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Filmed and edited by @dfellegy Recorded and mixed by @indieric and @neve1073 #indie #veronicamars #dandywarhols

@alan_palomo ’s Neon Indian project delivered equal parts synthetic nostalgia, Dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise to create something often eerier than the sum of its parts. The album tracks blended field recordings, record samples, and a collection of bizarre synth sounds. Here we have “Deadbeat Summer” from Neon Indian’s 2009 album, “Psychic Chasms,” released through @lefserecords . Hit 2k9 buzzband Neon Indian played a ‘live session’ in some sort of meaningful abandoned apartment. It seems like these videos might be a good way to replicate what the Neon Indian live experience would be like if you booked them to play for ‘only you’ in your 1 bedroom apartment. - #CRLS #HipsterRunoff Produced by @craigdodgelile #MyOldKentuckyBlog Recorded and mixed by @superduperstepdad Filmed and edited by @dfellegy #indie #neonindian

@thetwilightsad just released their first album in seven years, but back in 2009 we were enamored with the Scottish band’s sophomore album, “Forget The Night Ahead” and this song, “I Became A Prostitute.” James Graham said about the album, “The lyrics are very dark, but you might have to look into them a bit to realize [that]. They are mainly based around things that have happened to me over the past two years, revolving mainly around losing people and being none too proud or happy with myself about my antics and situations I’ve found myself in.” Throughout the album, Andy MacFarlane’s distinctive tremelo’d guitar created seismic shifts between melancholic introspection and explosive release.
