I’m so grateful to have documentary filmmaker Sebastian Solberg on my Youtube channel to talk about something every filmmaker (or creative) struggles with: failure.
The very idea of failure can cause anxiety, self-doubt, and creative paralysis, and I’ve certainly felt all of it. I first came across Sebastian’s blog post “Why Filmmakers Struggle with Failure (and How to Keep Going)” and found it incredibly honest and helpful. It inspired me to reach out and have an open conversation about what failure means and how we can move through it.
This interview is part of a new series I’m working on for my channel called “Before Your Breakthrough: Stories to Keep You Creating.” It’s made for anyone going through a tough season creatively - I hope it helps you feel less alone and reminds you to keep going.

You don’t need fancy gear to get started. Use your phone, experiment, and find creative ways to tell your story. Even in wildlife TV, rigs are often held together with cable ties and tape—improvisation is part of the process! 🎥📱 #WildlifeFilmmaking #FilmmakingTips #Creativity
Storytelling is the backbone of natural history filmmaking. 🌍🎥
In this video, Ava, an Assistant Producer, shares her thoughts on why storytelling is so powerful when filming wildlife.
She explains how creating relatable stories helps audiences connect with animals and environments that might feel completely unfamiliar. On location, she’s always thinking beyond beautiful shots—focusing on the emotions behind the footage and the story it tells.
Ava says it comes down to answering key questions:
Who is the character?
What are they trying to achieve?
What challenges are in their way?
By keeping these in mind, she turns raw footage into something audiences truly connect with.
How do you approach storytelling in your own filmmaking?

Struggling to shape your documentary’s story? The three-act structure is a game changer. 🎬
Act 1: Set the stage—introduce your characters and the challenge.
Act 2: Build the tension—watch your characters confront obstacles.
Act 3: Reach the climax—show the resolution that leaves a lasting impact.
This simple framework helps you transform raw footage into a compelling narrative that keeps audiences engaged.
