Die Tagung „Kunst – Ausstellung – Diskurs“ greift diese Debatten auf und bringt Wissenschaftler*innen, Künstler*innen und Interessierte zusammen. Im Fokus stehen die Rolle von Theorie in Ausstellungen, ihr Einfluss auf künstlerische Praktiken sowie Ausstellungen als Orte der Wissensproduktion. This question has shaped debates around the documenta since 1997, when theoretical discourse moved to the center of the exhibition—and remains highly relevant today, as Naomi Beckwith, curator of the upcoming documenta 16, recently highlighted in a Paris exhibition. The conference "Art – Exhibition – Discourse" takes up these debates, bringing together scholars, artists, and interested audiences. It focuses on the role of theory in exhibitions, its impact on artistic practices, and exhibitions as sites of knowledge production. Im Rahmen des Soziologischen Fachtags der Universität Kassel spricht Mi You über ihre Monographie "Art in a Multipolar World". Im Anschluss findet eine Diskussionsrunde mit Jenny Preunkert (Professorin für Makrosoziologie, Universität Kassel) statt. Datum: Montag, 27. April 2026 Uhrzeit: 16.15–18 Uhr Ort: Universität Kassel, Campus Center, Hörsaal 6 Politische Verwerfungen, wirtschaftliche Ungleichheiten, ideologische Kämpfe – all das spiegelt sich in den Künsten wieder. Mi You analysiert in "Art in a Multipolar World", wie die Kunst zur Arena wird, in der geopolitische Spannungen ausgetragen und Deutungshoheiten verhandelt werden. Im Zentrum steht die documenta fifteen: Als Kristallisationspunkt politischer Verschiebungen machte sie in Kassel die weltweiten Konflikte um Repräsentation und Solidarität sichtbar; sie wurde schließlich selbst zu einem Konfliktfeld. Den Blick weitet Mi You durch die Kontrastierung mit dem Rollenwandel der Kunst in China, der Multipolarität als Wettstreit um globale Normen begreifbar macht. Keine Anmeldung nötig. The talk will be followed by a discussion with Jenny Preunkert (Professor of Macrosociology, University of Kassel). In her book "Art in a Multipolar World", Mi You analyzes how art becomes an arena in which geopolitical tensions are played out and interpretive authority is negotiated. The focus is on documenta fifteen: as a focal point of political shifts, it made global conflicts over representation and solidarity visible in Kassel; it ultimately became a battleground itself. Mi You broadens the perspective by contrasting this with the changing role of art in China, which makes multipolarity understandable as a contest for global norms. No registration required. Das CELA, in Zusammenarbeit mit Kunst & Gesellschaft und dem documenta Institut, schreibt dieses Jahr wieder vier Vollstipendien für studentische Auslandsaufenthalte in Bogotá/Kolumbien aus. The stays will take place during the 2026/2027 winter semester at the Universidad del Rosario. Airfare and living expenses for the duration of the exchange will be covered. The scholarships are available to students at the Kassel Art Academy, the School of Architecture, and all humanities and social sciences programs. Insgesamt haben 2.314 Menschen die Ausstellung über ihre Laufzeit hinweg besucht und damit das große Interesse an zeitgenössischer chinesischer Kunst deutlich gemacht. Ein vielfältiges Begleitprogramm aus Gesprächen, Vorträgen und Diskussionen hat das Thema zusätzlich vertieft und neue Perspektiven eröffnet. Gestern waren Heinz Bude und Helmut Heit im Kasseler Kunstverein zu Gast und gaben spannende Einblicke in die Wirkungsgeschichte Nietzsches in China. Nietzsche zählt in China zu den einflussreichsten Denkern des „Westens“. Mao Zedong interessierte sich ebenso für Nietzsche wie der Schriftsteller Lu Xun und des Gelehrten und Journalisten Liang Qichao. Mit der Öffnung des Landes in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, suchten chinesische Studierende nicht zuletzt in Nietzsches Schriften Antworten auf ihre Fragen. Das Gespräch fand im Rahmen des Begleitprogramms zu unserer Ausstellung "The China Moment. Contextualizing Individualism in Chinese Contemporary Art" statt. Helmut Heit ist seit 2021 Leiter des Stabsreferats Forschung an der Klassik Stiftung Weimar, wo er seit seit 2019 das Kolleg Friedrich Nietzsche leitet. Meet our new books on contemporary art in China with professor and curator Mi You of @documentainstitut : In “Seeing through China” two perspectives on contemporary Chinese art interact in conversation with Heinz Bude: that of artist and curator Andreas Schmid, who was active in China primarily in the 1980s and 1990s, and that of Mi You, who was born in Beijing when Schmid left China. In 1993, Schmid, together with Hans van Dijk and Jochen Noth, presented the legendary China Avantgarde exhibition in Berlin and was part of a scene in China that leaped into the present without reservation. Mi You looks back on an art that succumbed to money, deluded itself with power, and is now uncertain of its posthumous fame. “The China Moment” explores one of the most dynamic turning points in global art history.
