ትምህርቲ መሰረት ምዕባለ እዩ” in Tigrigna meaning “Education is the foundation of development.”
These words are still visible above the doorway of Mekane Eyesus Primary School in Tigray a school now burned, looted, and left in ruins by war.
Yesterday, October 5 was World Teachers’ Day, I want to dedicate this photo essay to all the teachers across the world who continue to teach under impossible circumstances. To those in Tigray who stand before their students under the open sky with no classrooms, no books, and no pay but with unwavering faith that knowledge can rebuild what conflict has destroyed.
These teachers remind us that education is not just a profession; it is an act of resistance, hope, and humanity. #worldteachersday #tigray #educationinconflict #africanstories #resilience #PhotoEssay #TeachersOfAfrica #hopethrougheducation
Chasing sunrises in Tigray isn’t as easy as it looks. Woke up before dawn chasing the ‘perfect sunrise’ … only for the sun to play hide and seek with us. 😅 Still, the fields, the people, and the light made the journey worth it. 🌾 #tigray #documentaryfilm #Tigray #documentingafrica #🧡

Grateful to have spoken at the Urgent Action Fund Africa event in Mombasa last week. Sharing my journey about trauma-informed reporting, especially through my documentary work on fistula and war-related sexual violence in Tigray. It was a powerful reminder of why this approach matters so deeply. Trauma-informed storytelling isn’t just a method it’s a responsibility when documenting communities that have endured so much.
Huge appreciation to our amazing facilitator, Melissa Wainaina, and to my fellow speakers Charity, Denise and Justine for bringing such thoughtful and diverse perspectives. I’m honored to have learned alongside you.
And thank you to everyone who showed up, listened, and held space for these stories. Your presence helps amplify women’s voices and keeps these crucial conversations alive. 💛 @psicologa_denise_kondelaque
Thanks

Most of my documentary work didn’t come from job boards, it came from real connections. 🙏🏾 Nurture your network. Stay in touch, celebrate others, and show gratitude you never know which door will open next. Grateful to reconnect with @jpdobrin and thanks for the opportunity, especially as fellow UC Berkeley Journalism grads. 🎓❤️
