Statement of Solidarity // “The current and former students of the DOCNOMADS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Documentary Filmmaking (“DocNomads”) express their solidarity with the students and teachers of the University of Theatre and Film Arts (Színház- és Filmművészeti Egyetem), known as “SZFE” in Budapest, Hungary regarding the current instability of its autonomous status and leadership.
DocNomads is a two-year, full time, international graduate program delivered by a consortium of three prominent European universities across three countries: Portugal, Hungary and Belgium. SZFE started the DocNomads program in 2012 with the collaboration of its Portuguese and Belgian partner universities providing space and educational instruction for more than 190 students from 66 countries across the globe. Film produced from students of DocNomads during the program were selected for participaton over 400 film festivals around the world receiving prestigious awards and creating the basis for co-productions in international and Hungarian documentary markets. DocNomads is the first joint master in Europe in the field of FILM that was granted the right to use the Erasmus Mundus brand name. It was also selected as a Success Story by a panel of experts from the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission. This success story is continuing as the program received support to start four new editions in the future.
The current and former students of DocNomads are deeply concerned that the autonomy of SZFE is under threat. „We, who come from different countries and cultures to study in SZFE, believe in free critical thinking and artistic expression. This is exactly the spirit and atmosphere we experienced while we spent a semester in SZFE, and which is a basic necessity for creating documentary films that critically reflect our reality. The university’s autonomy, free thinking, and equal dialogue is a basic need in every artistic expression, and we stand up for it.”
