Once upon a time—or let’s say 1971 to be precise—my father gave me a lovely 16-foot Huron model cedar-strip canoe 🛶 built by the legendary Quebec canoemaker Tremblay. It was red and covered with a new-at-the-time canvas-synthetic laminate material called verolite, which didn’t tear as easily as canvas and, in the event, was easy to repair with duct tape or epoxy. I called the craft “Neegik,” the Ojibwa word for otter. It was my prize possession and I paddled the crap out of it on several month-long teenage canoe trips in Ontario. It got pretty beat up running rivers, with several punched-in ribs and other cosmetic injuries. In the mid-80s, a friend with a love of classic canoes—and wood-working skills I didn’t have—offered to help fix it. He did some good work replacing ribs and planking, and we also re-covered it with standard canvas painted forest green. We removed and did not replace the original keel. Neegik 2.0 lived for some 30 years at the family cottage, which passed from my parents hands to my youngest brother. I always paddled her when I visited, including on a two-week trip through Algonquin Park with my 16 year-old daughter in 2010; I did some light restoration before that trip, notably restoring the keel. When I wasn’t there to put it on a rack, however, it often sat on the moist ground, the wood of the stems and gunwales succumbing to inevitable rot. When my brother sold the cottage in 2019, I drove from Canada’s west coast all the way to Ontario to pick up Neegik and bring her to my home in Whistler. Here are some lovely rattlesnakes in a lovely setting doing lovely rattlesnakey things while being studied by rattlesnakey people highly interested in their welfare. It was a pleasure and privilege to help out on spring den surveys with the now 24-year long Nk’mip snake program on assignment for @montecristo_mag . Fascinating animals and a key part of the South Okanagan desert ecosystem.🐍 #science #conservation #snakes #herpetology #speciesatrisk

It’s spring. And it’s warm. So what can I say? 🤷🏼‍♂️ It was a herpy kind of day out there. 🤓😊🐍 Northern rubber boa ✅ Wandering gartersnake ✅ Sharp-tailed snake ✅ Long-toed salamander ✅ Western red-backed salamander ✅ #snakes #salamanders #herps #herpetology #pemberton

So long Manabu Ikeda. Once again, it has been a slice. And a very detailed one at that! 🤓 #manabuikeda #audainartmuseum #whistler

Instillation art outside Whistler’s Audain Art Museum. It’s called “Atmospheric River: Day 5” and was created by the greatest artist of all time — Nature. With this timely work, she manages to perfectly capture the pain of climate change along with the desultory vibe of winter 2025/26. #whistler #winter #art #climatechange

There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to how we know what we know about dinosaurs 🦕 — some 150 years worth of scientific advancements and understanding — plus a lot of “fun” misinterpretations and whimsical paleo-art (like this illustration). A ton of research but I was up for the task. 🤓Check it out now in @cangeo ! #dinosaurs #paleontology #fossils #evolution

After weeks of drooling over stunning Olympic footage from Cortina d’Ampezzo, you might ask yourself: how do I get there, and how do I ski that place? This is what I consider a perfect photo — the intensity, the composition, the moment, the shallow depth of field, and the slight aura created around the subject’s head make for an unforgettable capture. Black & white film definitely aids the cause. It’s titled “Priscilla, Jones Beach” and was taken by Joseph Szabo in 1969. It’s part of the stunning new exhibition “Into the Wosk Collection: Discovery & Wonder” that just opened at the Audain Art Museum in Whistler. Lots of cool stuff by internationally renowned photographers as well as drawings by Picasso (!!!), Matisse, Chagall and other noted artists. HIGHLY recommended. 😊🤓
