For Ilya Shcheglov, racing Baja for the first time was the fulfillment of a long-held dream.
“The navigation was very interesting and sometimes very difficult for me because everything was completely new,” said Shcheglov. “But the course was beautiful, and I really enjoyed the race and the experience overall.
“Racing in the United States and Mexico has always been a dream of mine. I found information about the rally online and decided I wanted to come experience Baja for myself.
“This is such a big and difficult race with many famous riders and racers competing, so just being here and finishing is already something very special to me. Whether it’s first place, second place, or any result, the experience itself is what matters most.
“The bike was a little different from what I normally ride at home, so it took some adjusting. In Baja you need to adapt quickly and learn different terrain and riding styles. But overall, it was amazing.
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to come here and be part of this rally.”

While the four-wheel competitors have been battling their way south through Baja, the moto race has been writing its own story on a separate course built around true rally navigation, technical terrain, and old-school Baja grit.
“The race is going very well for me,” said Shcheglov. “I am very happy and proud to compete with Colton in one race on one track, and to be able to challenge him. The race itself is incredibly interesting and beautiful. I am super happy to be here and represent Russian motorsports for the first time. Tomorrow is the decisive day, and let the strongest win.”
Day 5 proved especially difficult for Shcheglov, who dealt with slippery rocks, winding roads, front tire and rim damage, and a complete roadbook GPS failure. With navigation compromised, he backed down the pace and focused on reaching the finish safely.
Udall praised Shcheglov’s effort and the level of competition in the moto field.
“Ilya is an awesome navigator,” said Udall. “He’s down here in my territory, so finding that Baja-moving speed is probably the challenge, but it’s been great battling back and forth with him. I’m really digging all the moto competitors.”
For the moto competitors, NORRA’s Baja 6-Day has delivered exactly what rally racing is supposed to be: navigation, adventure, and a little bit of Baja chaos.
