I've just re-issued my very first mix tape from 2000 — DarkerSideOfBass. This one was the beginning. Back when everything was still on vinyl, cassette decks, late nights, and stacks of dubplates. Dark techstep, hard rollers, futuristic atmospheres, and that raw late-90’s Drum & Bass sound that pulled me in from the start. Originally released on cassette in April of 2000, this was one of the first FurtherSound releases and one of the tapes that helped lay the foundation for everything that came after. These were real pressed tapes sold in shops, mailed around the country, traded hand to hand, and blasted in cars at ridiculous volume. Expect dark, stripped-out grooves, heavy bass pressure, rolling drums, and that classic end-of-the-millennium techy sound. No edits. No reworks. Just preserved exactly how it was. Originally recorded during the early 2000s cassette/CD era, Structure was my fifth release—and the first one I put out outside of cassette. This mix ended up defining my career. It opened doors and led to bookings all over the U.S., and not long after its release I was booked for a tour in Poland, playing Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, and Gdańsk. The sound is exactly where I was at the time—dark, techy, rolling drum & bass with that raw energy the scene was built on. Revisiting this one 25 years later and putting it back out for anyone who was there—and for those who weren’t. New updated artwork, but no edits or reworks. Reissue out MONDAY at 7PM on my SoundCloud. DarkerSideOfBass (April 2000) My very first officially released Drum & Bass mixtape. Released at the tail end of the cassette era, DarkerSideOfBass was widespread through record stores and underground music shops throughout Chicago and the Midwest. Seeing the original $12 retail sticker still on the package 25 years later is honestly wild. Recorded fully on vinyl, this mix captured the darker techstep and sci-fi influenced Drum & Bass sound I was deeply into at the time — heavy basslines, atmospheric textures, futuristic elements, and aggressive transitions that helped shape my style in those early years. While later copies eventually circulated through tape trades and dubbed copies across the underground, the original release itself was a professionally packaged cassette release with full artwork and retail distribution. This tape marked the true beginning of my journey and the foundation of what would later become FurtherSound. I’ve started restoring the original artwork, tapes, and recordings from the archives one piece at a time. That's right, this month we're going back to the ALL VINYL format with an amazing lineup to share for you all. We've got a special set from 18amdCounting coming in May and if you know this man by now, also know that he rarely goes genre-specific during his sets. He's known for NOT going that route, but has promised us a 160bpm set that we cannot wait to hear! This is one of those magical "had to be there sets", and it doesn't stop there.
