#DMVHistory | Benjamin Banneker
Born in 1731 in Ellicott Mills, Maryland, Benjamin Banneker was a self-taught mathematician, astronomer, inventor, and one of the earliest African American intellectuals to gain national recognition. Raised on a farm by free Black parents, Banneker had little formal education but taught himself advanced math and science using borrowed books and a deep curiosity about the natural world.
In the late 1700s, he built a fully functioning wooden clock that kept accurate time for decades ā a remarkable feat of engineering. He later used his astronomical knowledge to publish a series of almanacs between 1792 and 1797 that included eclipse predictions, weather forecasts, and anti-slavery essays, becoming widely read and respected.
Banneker also played a key role in surveying the land that would become Washington, DC, working alongside Andrew Ellicott to map out the nation's new capital. His presence in such a monumental project was groundbreaking at the time.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Banneker boldly challenged slavery and racism. In 1791, he wrote a powerful letter to Thomas Jefferson, calling out the hypocrisy of slavery in a nation founded on liberty. Jefferson responded ā a rare acknowledgment of Bannekerās intellect and moral courage.
From the fields of Maryland to the foundation of the U.S. capital, Benjamin Banneker's legacy is a testament to brilliance, resilience, and fearless pursuit of truth.

#DMVHistory | Thurgood Marshall
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 2, 1908, was a trailblazer in the fight for civil rights. He grew up in a time of segregation but never let barriers stop him. After being rejected from the University of Maryland Law School due to his race, he attended Howard University School of Law, where he studied under the legendary Charles Hamilton Houston.
As a lawyer for the NAACP, Marshall led the charge in cases that reshaped America, including Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which ended racial segregation in public schools. Throughout his career, he won 29 out of 32 cases before the Supreme Court, making him one of the most successful legal minds in American history.
In 1967, Marshall made history again as the first Black Supreme Court Justice, where he spent 24 years fighting for individual rights, free speech, and equal protection under the law. His legacy paved the way for progress and justice in America, ensuring that the fight for equality continues today.
