âTis the season!
Manzano Fire, Sun Gold, Paul Robeson, Cherokee Purple.
Big thanks to all the plant breeders, seed producers and seed savers for giving us a chance to grow something really delicious in a bit of soil. Thank you!
Now, if nights would stop dipping down to 46° F, it would be greatâŠ
Great story about fried shallots by @kenjilopezalt in NYTimes. Now I know what to do with all the shallots Iâm growing.
Beautiful work by @simoncooks as always. Thanks @kgoug and the whole @nytcooking crew!!
The watermelon salad is phenomenal. Make it! Maybe donât use all 12 birdâs-eye chilies. đđ¶đ„

âTis the season for chive blossom vinegar.
1.25 parts white vinegar to 1 part water.
1 Tablespoon-ish kosher salt.
Pack a jar with chive blossoms and cover with liquid.
Chuck in fridge for a few weeks.
Done.

Some garden successes and a few failures this season, but itâs been good fun so far. Not bad for total neglect: not watering once, no fence and compost so full of wood chips that the beds are basically self-mulching.
Iâm basically a lettuce farmer now. (He says after growing 8 head of lettuce.) The dragons tongue beans from @bakercreekseeds are phenomenal! And grow like weeds. Flowers are hitting their stride.
Something sampled my first slicing tomato about 2 days before I would have. Bears ripped out all 16 stalks of Astronomy sweet corn (and didnât touch the beans). And flea beetles (I think) got apocalyptic on the potatoes.
The last one is a little view I opened up at the top of the property looking across the valley. Great spot for a pre-production call. And, frankly, the only place with cell service.
Hope summer is a good one for you and you have a chance to get your hands in some soil⊠or at least on a ripe tomato.

I believe the kids call this a âbowlâ. Kidding, thatâs what 30-somethings call it. Kids call it: âgross! Whatâs that green stuff!?â I put sour cream and (very) hot sauce on it when you werenât looking. Have a great Friday evening!
