DLSA is thrilled to welcome Mrs. Nadine Carroll ’93 back to DLSA this summer as the Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning! Mrs. Carroll is an alum of DLSA and served as a faculty and staff member for six years prior to serving as the Associate Head of School at West Side Montessori, where she has been working for the past three years. During her first tenure at DLSA, Mrs. Carroll taught 7th and 8th grade math, Math Lab, and Doing Science, and served as both Academic Dean and Director of Teaching and Learning. In her new role, Mrs. Carroll will provide strategic leadership for instructional excellence across the school, shaping pedagogy, curriculum coherence, and faculty professional growth in alignment with the school’s mission. Mrs. Carroll says: “Returning to De La Salle feels deeply meaningful. It has always held a special place in my heart because of its extraordinary community, one rooted in reflection, connection, and genuine care for each student, faculty, and staff. It is exactly what our schools need more of today! In the three years since I left, De La Salle has continued to grow and thrive under Dr. Ángel Gonzalez’s leadership. I'm inspired by his bold vision to make DLSA one of the best middle schools in the country! I’m honored to join the leadership team in advancing that work and contributing to what makes this place so special. There is so much ahead and I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of it.” Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Nadine Carroll ’93 back to DLSA!

In preparation for the upcoming @billionoyster Student Symposium, the DLSA Green Team has spent the spring semester visiting sites along New York City's waterfront to learn about how we measure and observe the health of our local waterways. Students used each site visit to think about how designing public spaces thoughtfully can have a positive impact on improving the quality of our ecosystems and reducing water pollutants. They visited Brooklyn Bridge Park on their most recent excursion. Once their research was complete, they made a necessary stop at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory!

Last week, we said goodbye to our beloved friend, teacher, and long-time DLSA administrator, Brother David Detje. Brother David was integral to the founding of DLSA, and his impact on our community is woven into the fabric of who we are as a school. His decades of dedication and care for our students and his faithfulness to our mission are a pillar of both our history and legacy. His memory will continue to guide us for generations to come. To read the full message to our community, please click the link in our bio. Alums and former faculty, we invite you to share your memories of Brother David in the comments.

Our next Alum Shout Out is Jeremy Schrager ’07! After DLSA, Jeremy attended the George School, then Bennington College. He now serves as the Director of Operations and Global Quality for Carbone! Jeremy says of his time at DLSA: “I use the tools given by DLSA's principles of excellence, collaboration, and thoroughness every day when working with my teams around the world. My early days in NYC – especially in the microcosm of DLSA's diverse and vibrant community – prove relevant each and every day as I apply those values and commitments to the greater worldwide community I find myself in. As a youngster, my appreciation of the post-lunch chat with Brother Brian, parties, and community gatherings – with a focus on food – were clearly indicative of the career I have pursued. As the Director of Operations and Global Quality for Carbone, I continue to focus on building community around the table across the globe.” Jeremy, we are proud of you!

Our next Alum Shout Out is Patricia Ureña ’02! After DLSA, Patricia went to the Hotchkiss School, then Boston University where she earned a B.A. in International Relations. She is completing her MBA at CUNY Brooklyn College this spring! Patricia has built a 15+ year career empowering leaders and organizations to drive social impact through strategic program design, community engagement, and transformational leadership development. As Director of Strategic Initiatives at Coro NY Leadership Center, Patricia supports the growth and development of New York City's leadership community through impactful programming, leadership training, and strategic consulting engagements across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. She creates space for leaders to increase their self-awareness and capacity while facilitating organizational transformation through customized training, coaching, and change management consulting that drives meaningful change across various communities and sectors. Patricia says of her time at DLSA: “De La Salle has been an integral and invaluable part of my personal growth. I am immensely grateful for all the lessons, challenges, care, support, and wholesome joy the school provided me as a young student from uptown. De La Salle Academy taught me the importance and power of community, integrity, kindness, and self-responsibility—values that continue to influence the way I move through the world today. The teachers and staff truly nurtured my love for knowledge, people and the world around me, creating a safe space that allowed me to be curious and to expand my view of what was possible. To this day, I still consider the school a safe landing place and a warm, welcoming community of wonderful, thoughtful people committed to doing great work to help students reach their full potential. Patricia, we are proud of you!
