There’s a story told to Stanford athletes that’s been passed down over the years. The football team got back from a road game early in the morning. It’s pouring rain. As the bus turned into campus, they go by the driving range and there’s a car’s headlights shining on a guy hitting balls by himself in the downpour. Tiger.
The next day one of the trainers asks him about it and he just says: “I don’t know when I’m going to have to play a big tournament while it’s raining, but it’ll happen someday. I need to be prepared.”
It rained during the final round of the 2019 Masters. Success leaves clues. Be prepared.

Two years ago I was lucky enough to partner with some brilliant people to make some beautiful things for a game that I truly love. I don’t have a background in design, fashion, or even business — I literally pay people to make deals on my behalf. And admittedly, not a lot of writers start golf brands. But I love telling stories and I love to make stuff. And that’s happening less and less in my other job, for all of us. So in a lot of ways, this project has saved me. Allowed me a creative outlet and control over the fate of a project that feels unattainable at times in my other work. This isn’t the first time golf has saved me, and it won’t be the last. It’s just nice to love something you pour yourself into and have it love you back. Like family. Or hard drugs. I joke (not really), but creating is like a drug. And I’ll be forever grateful to this team, at this moment, for enabling me.
