2025 was the year I first held a camera in my hands.
2025 was the year I stepped onto a set for the very first time.
2025 was the year I learned how to say no.
2025 was the year I finally figured out what I wanted, and stopped listening to everyone else’s opinions.
2025 was the year I truly felt like myself.
And I love it.
“D7KA”
These photos were taken during one of my uni workshops last year, the first time I ever held a camera. I went into the streets looking for the hardest-working people we pass every day without truly noticing .
I wanted to capture the forced smiles,
smiles given to clients after long hours of hard-work , exhaustion, and humiliation. Smiles that are no longer joy, but survival.
When I asked them to recreate that smile, some laughed. Others whispered, “nsina ta ki kand7ko”, “we even forgot how to smile.”
These images are not about happiness. They expose a system that demands politeness while denying dignity.
