Closing out 2025 as my 25th year of being a full-time professional DJ. For all those new here and just discovering me, my name is EXCEL. I started DJing in 1991 and DJing became a full-time, world traveling, profession for me around the year 2000.
Originally from Philadelphia, now living in Los Angeles as of 17 years. I’ve played in most of the big and smaller venues up and down the east coast, in what some would say were some the prime years in nightlife. I’ve held residencies in all the major cities (PHL, NYC, MIA, VEGAS, LA, CHI, BOS), worked in radio, toured with artists, and played some of the best international clubs all before any social media was a factor. (Not one of those gigs was secured through gig swaps or any back door type deals)
Contrary to some belief, it is very possible for a dj, like myself, to play music like rare groove, jazz, funk, soul, gospel, world music, etc and still play the party music and hits equally as well. Let this post be your answer if you ever have to question my ability.
I’ve spent a lifetime maintaining the juggle of all the music I love.
• When i started at age 11, disco, breaks, and hip hop was my love.
• That progressed into 90s hip hop and jazz,
• Which also progressed into me wanting to play for people and feeding off their energy.
• The late 90s into 2000’s exposed me to Pop music, Baltimore Club, Southern Hip Hop and working in radio tied it all together.
Growing up in Philly, being into hip hop also meant for a lot of us, you knew house music, jungle, drum & bass, Miami Bass, freestyle club, reggae, etc. I’d be very surprised if you found someone in my age range that wasn’t familiar with most of these.
In short I like playing good music for good people. That love varies in musical choice due to the environment. Maintaining solid relationships and being a good person also helped to keep my dream alive.
Don’t let 1, 2 or 5 IG videos instill doubt in my ability. There’s more than a few of my live sets from different venues and parties that display how broad my range is.
I DO THIS. I’VE BEEN DOING THIS. I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP DOING THIS. I EXCEL AND PREVAIL. See you in 26!
