DJ Shadow shared the ‘Appropriation’ cover I did a few years ago for the recent 25 year anniversary of ENDtroducing. Crazy. My brother and I took this phot in 2016 at Dixon’s in Blackburn in Melbourne. It’s the front cover to my DJ mixtape ‘Approprition’. Here is the link for it: /stefan-cusack/appropriation Both my brother and I and massive music collectors and we didn’t want to just recreate the album cover. So we used CDs instead (As the cover was looking to really capture the idea of ‘Appropriation’). We tried to pay respect to all of the elements that makes the cover great. Eg: Body Language me hunched over a bit with the arms similar but changing it to looking at the Tribe album with a magnifying glass (Decktektive). We used similar style clothing (colours or style), tilted head, record under the arm (paying homage to the original with a signed copy). Then go subtly add a few extra elements in we changed the hanging genre sign at the top that originally said ‘Hip Hop/Rap’ to Appropriation. We also added in my DJ logo in the background to try and blend in with the posters from the store. Today is an important day in the Hip Hop timeline as it has reached its 50th year anniversary. This culture has uplifted an empowered so many and has given them a reason for existence. From its humble beginnings in New York to what it has become over the 50 years, it’ll always been one of my biggest personal motivators and has a special place in my heart. ‘Fantastic Damage’ by El-P is one of those albums that I always seem to come back to. Every time I put it on, I notice some new sound or weird little sample buried somewhere in the mix that I hadn’t picked up before. Having ‘Fandam Plus’ as well makes you appreciate the album even more. Listening to the instrumentals without the vocals over the top really lets all the strange layers and details stand out.
