It’s been my personal mission to create black heroes in the genre space. I saw my #HowardAlumni brother @rmitch_jr on the cover of The Washington Post reporting about him saving lives and at one point being the youngest Chief Medical Examiner in the country. I called him and said “Bro… your life is a tv show!” he said, “I know Jerry Bruckheimer just called me😂”… we decided to roll the dice together and create a universe of real life heroes who originated at Howard University with Truth being the Iron Man aka Tony Stark. We workshopped this pitch like a two man show. Pitching a medical mystery with an action hero. Our partners at Blackmaled Productions @malcolmdlee@mscottallen@dtelson31@kitrisundaram understood the mission and with @dmgproductions as my co-pilot. we found a studio home at Universal Television and @nbc (which is CRAZY, because watching A Different World on NBC as a kid made me want to goto Howard!)… I continue to learn nothing is impossible when faith meets creative hard work. When I was a kid I’d ride my bike to the video store, that became my library… “Scanners”, “They Live” “RoboCop”, “Halloween”, “The Thing”, “Enemy Mine”, “Flash Gordon”, “The Warriors”, “Faces of Death”, “Big Trouble in Little China”, “Escape From New York”… turns out I was studying and didn’t even know. I just knew I wanted to make genre movies. That was my dream. There is no playbook… I took the long way. The studied way. The artist way. After the strikes I was unsure of this business and sometimes unsure of myself to keep it 💯. But still keeping faith. Building up creative experience and currency. Praying and manifesting. Still studying the greats. Writing. Watching classics. Working out. Swimming. Wishing Blessings for my friends and family. Thanking God for creative inspiration… Then 20th Century Fox called. This past weekend my son ended his first season EVER of high school track by being invited to represent his school #Vistamar at the state track and field CIFs. I’m still in awe (along with the entire coaching staff😂) of this hidden talent he’s been blessed with and now his dedication to finding out just how good he is. Saturday he recorded a new personal best speed time in addition to making me shed some fatherly tears 🙏🏽🥹 🏃🏾💨Love you son!

When I wrote/directed my first film “Homecoming” for Blumhouse my producers told me we had to change the title, there were two other movies coming out called “Homecoming”. I suggested “THRILLER” because some of my favorite slasher movies had one word titles like “Halloween” and “Scream”… but mostly because I wanted to do a small tribute to MJ who had so much pop-culture influence on me as a kid including the THRILLER video. The studio’s attorneys informed me they would have to clear the title with the Michael Jackson estate. Which to me was NEVER going to happen… not in a million years. Never. But they did! No extra charge, no drama, no problems. So I got to call my first film “THRILLER” and have a small part of me dedicate it to MJ. Congratulations to the Jackson estate and @antoinefuqua on the #1 movie in the world!!! #michaeljackson
My son started running H.S. track for the first time in his life six weeks ago… this week he broke a speed record at Santa Monica High. Keep grinding Kid Flash 🏃🏾💨

My son’s HBCU college tour has been in the works for months… so for the day to finally arrive for his final visit on the tour to be at Howard and meet me on campus was beyond #fullcircle it was surreal… walking in the spaces that changed my life and sharing that up close with my first born has been pure magic. Thank you for the village that helped plan and put this together that continues to help support and raise the next young kings and queens and hopefully future #HowardAlumni
