Immerse me in crafts and craft clusters of India and I am the happiest. @somaiya_kala_vidya did exactly that and invited me to Kutch to cover their artisans graduating design project earlier last December. Newly equipped with a design vocabulary, the young artisans walked me through trend forecasts, their moodboards, how they were rethinking their crafts with this new language and skill set, one student shared a Ronaldo “jersey” reimagined in his traditional Bandhani ✨I spent a few days extra in Kutch, speaking to alumni masterweaver like Pachan Suji sir and more recent graduate artisans like Zaid khatri (who also fed me a fab lunch). Spent the days learning how the school had impacted their craft. How for the very first time these incredible artisans were just allowed to draw and draw freely. The liberty that gave them and their designs.

Vogue India May/ June print issue. If anyone knows me, tattoos and I are poles apart but here I was pitching a story about tattoos + craft. It all started when I chanced upon the designer Ankita from @paher.in and couldn’t look away from the tattoos of the craft she works with, inked upon her skin. Which lead me down a rabbit hole of the craft and the world of craft- based Godna. Many craftswomen and men of India have been known for their community based tattooing on their body. Which posed the question did the craft motif come first or the motif inked on their body. I spoke to the incredible @border.line.tattoos @bluebloodtreetattoo who completely educated me and took me on the journey of the craft of craft-based godna in India.💛💛

Fashion illustration has been my portal to the fashion industry. The most consistent thing I have done over the years is to illustrate. Drawing to get closer to things I loved, to understand it better, to unravel what I felt. That is why this piece will mean a lot to me ⭐️ A big thank you to @daviddownton @jennymwalton @jooleeloren @davidabraha for being constant sources of inspiration and giving me your time for this copy.

I got to speak to some of my icons for this. I’m good to retire. Funny when saved Pinterest and Instagram dreams turn real. Interviewed the legends I grew up admiring — David Downton (@daviddownton ) whose glamorous illustrations started it all for me. Jenny Walton (@jennymwalton ) fashions sweetheart, the vintage loving front row sketcher I was envious of. Julie Houts (@jooleeloren ) whose satire carried us through fashion and David Abraham of @abrahamandthakore who showed how sketching sits at the core of his design process.

This shoot was inspired by a trend I noticed on Instagram, where many women like @katfromfinance and @alinarolling , spoke about how dressing up to work became their salvation. Some had formulated an inversely proportionate formula: the more boring the job, the more they dressed up. The importance of something to look forward to—that bathroom selfie, a work bestie—anything to remedy sitting for 9 hours under that god awful fluorescent lighting. Shot by @amitabhbachpan HMU by the lovely @eleni_chatzinikolidou Talent @surbhishukla @geetasha.rana Bookings @alizaafatmaa Assisted by @nyasaathakkar and Saumya
