🫧🤿 ALTITUDE DIVER 🌋
Diving in Lake Atitlán felt like exploring another world. At 1,560 meters above sea level, this altitude dive already makes it unique. Beneath the surface, volcanic rock walls drop into the deep, shaped by ancient eruptions.🌋 In some spots, the heat still rises from below… so hot we actually cooked an egg underwater 🍳 A dive I’ll never forget.
Formed over 80,000 years ago after a massive volcanic collapse, the lake sits inside a giant caldera surrounded by volcanoes 🌋🌋🌋 Those dramatic rock walls are part of that history, built from layers of cooled lava and ash, now hidden beneath the surface but still very much alive.
Thank you @divingatitlan 😎🤙🏼🇬🇹

We left Antigua for Lake Atitlán, a lake surrounded by volcanoes—some dormant, some active. We knew there was a diving center there where you can take the PADI course for altitude diving, and of course we wanted to do that. After all, who doesn’t want to dive in a beautiful high-altitude volcanic crater lake?
We took an early boat from our little village, Santa Catarina Palopó, to the village of Santa Cruz. The view was spectacular. Our divemaster, Gormac, was the kindest of divemasters, and we felt very safe with him. Lake Atitlán lies at an altitude of 1,562 meters, so you need to be extra careful when planning your dives here. Our first dive was at the site called Rambo II (why is it that so many places we’ve dived at have at least one “Rambo”?). Visibility was almost zero, so we didn’t see much, but we did a narrow swim-through. It started at 22 meters and was just wide enough for one diver at a time—we popped out at 15 meters on the other side. Pretty cool!
After breakfast at the very nice hostel by the dive center, we did our second dive at a place called Agua Caliente. We descended to 13 meters, following a fissure where hot vents make the water so hot that you can crack an egg and watch the yolk turn into a little ball you can play with. Gormac placed an egg in the sand, and while we explored the area for 15 minutes, the egg actually boiled. It’s so hot down there that if you stick your hand into the sand, you’ll get burned.
