āRemember when we found Misery,
We watched her spread her wings
And slowly, slowly fly around our roomā¦
She asked for your gentle mind.
Misery is a butterfly.ā
This lyric was stuck in my head the whole race. Misery kept flutteringāsometimes landing right on my nose. Every time, I was reminded to stay gentle, calm, and grateful for the privilege of moving through these mountains.
The race was beautiful. Training prep was on point, and I feel full and content after this one. Couldnāt have done it without the MBTC boiss @ajlewen@lion_schellerer@thunderbird_theo who also crushed their races. Big love to the crew. šŖ
Also big shoutout to @phamqvuv for the company. I really enjoyed running with you and seeing your massive improvement in two years!
Hereās to more trails, more battles, and more moments like this. š¦āØ

Another great running year ššš
Started off the year with a 10K PB in Glasgow and a 5K PB in a Park Run. What followed was a horrible 2 month posterior tibialis injury spell which meant I had to compete both 2XU Half and BTR 60KM with a painful right shin splint (which I donāt recommend at all)
Very fortunate to get a PB in the half-marathon and Top 10 in the Bali Ultra despite the injury. Took a strict 6-week break from running and introduced a lot of cycling and stairmaster. In a way, the injury was a blessing as it gave me time to work on my strength.
The training block for VMM 70K was the highlight for this year. So grateful for the running company of @lion_schellerer and @ajlewen . Couldnāt have done it without their support. Super satisfied with a top 5 finish. Toughest race this year by a mile.
Couldnāt ask for a better ending for the year by clinching my first ultra marathon podium. Couldnt do it without the support of the @perpetual___path gang who I met earlier in August for their super fun Miles Out Loud event. Hoping to get stronger and faster in 2026, and starting something new šš Thank you all for sharing the miles with me this year. Enjoyed meeting new running friends, letās all motivate each other to reach newer heights š»š»š»
SGP100 Ultra 50K - š„
My first ultramarathon podium capping a beautiful running year. The race was tough right from the start, with Hiroyuki and Taro setting the pace up till Foothill; where I was dropped by both of them. My glutes were burning a bit heading up Panisan but I had to keep calm and know that once I consume more fuel, it will dissipate.
And it did. I managed to catch up with Taro at the waterfall and continued climbing @ RPE 6 till I reach Cisadon. The Gedongan loop was surprisingly great as the path hasnt muddied yet. The downhill back to Cisadon costed me a dozen rolled ankles. Tried my best to RPE 7 to reach Kandang Sapi but was often stalled by jeeps and scramblers.
I was so surprised to see Hiroyuki at CP4 because I have been running alone for about 5 hours. That gave me a nice boost. I was preparing to finish off strong with a RPE 8 on the roads but the bare noon Sun + fumes + traffic meant I had to dial down a lot to ensure I keep moving steady.
I reached the last road climb, which was kinda brutal in the heat and decided to power hike when suddenly the boys started shouting in the car āCMON SADIQ!!!ā, I turned back and saw Taro running up the uphill like a warrior and thought to myself ādamn i guess I have to threshold the last 4K then.ā
With that heat, I was bouncing between focusing on my effort and not passing out. I didnt wanna look back anymore, just wanted to end. What a beautiful way to end. Iām so happy with my training preparation, fuel strategy (~90-95g/hr) and rest/mental state going into the race.
Couldnt have done it without the @perpetual___path gang. Thank you all so much for the support šš½ and @sgp100ultra for organising a beautiful race š«¶š½
Had a great time peak-bagging with friends from Jakarta and Bogor @perpetual___path@heartrate.run in Sentul/Cisadon. Hopefully more to come! Mantaaaaaap š¤š½

š»Training Talk: How to Train for an Ultra in flat SG
Race: Vietnam Mountain Marathon 70K(4000m EG)
Training Period:
14 weeks
3 x (3 gradual weeks + 1 recovery week)
2 x week gradual taper
1st Month: base building + threshold work (easy flat runs + track thresholds)
2nd Month: elevation-bagging work (lots of BTH and Faber repeats + stairmaster)
3rd Month: trail/technical specific work (e.g steep uphills or long downhills in neighbouring countries)
Total mileage: 908km
Total EG: 36,500m
Coming from a 6-week strictly no running injury break, I had to start from scratch. Had to sacrifice more mileage for cross training (long cycles or stairmasters) to minimise further impact on my pos-tib tendon. I feel it kinda paid off: I think my quads learned to clear lactate better during my long cycles and non-stop stairmaster sessions. Overall I had more time to recover in this block (often only 5 running days a week). My body was thanking me.
I also had to sacrifice my favourite long steasy runs (only did two 30K runs during the recovery weeks) as the race profile had almost no flat course. Instead, BTH tarmacs and Faber repeats took over. 15% incline treadmill runs also helped stir the pot.
Not forgetting the main training: proper carb loading before and during training (and no more post-workout Guinness š«£)
I think the training did itās job. Super tough to train 90% in Singapore but with the right company it aināt so bad @lion_schellerer@ajlewen (Also very proud of them for crushing their races: Lion got 3rd for Under 30 category for 70K and AJ got 18th in a stacked World Trail Majors 100K)
Thought it would be nice to share how I prepared for my races. I believe the training structure shouldnt be so complex. Just gotta face the stimulus.
On to the next one! šÆĀ SGP50!
