Disobedience Archive in 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕎𝕙𝕚𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕖𝕣𝕤 / Part 2
Over the last twenty years, the Disobedience Archive has been presented worldwide in different formats, each time under spatial arrangements orchestrated by artists. In The Whisperers, Scotini chose the theme of gender to guide the selection of videos distributed on eight screens, covering a wide geographical and chronological scope. Gender inventory is “dedicated to nomadic subjectivities, conceived as a rupture of heterosexual binarism. This section brings together the alliances between activism that critiques capitalism and the LGBTQ+ movements that have emerged globally.”
Videos included in the exhibition:
Ege Berensel, 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯, 2018,
Zanny Begg, 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘪𝘦 (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘦), 2025,

Archive production is also a recurring form within curatorial practice. A long-running example is the Disobedience Archive, initiated by Italian curator Marco Scotini in 2005, which collects videos by artists from different backgrounds working at the intersection of art and political action. According to the founder, “The project generates an atlas of contemporary resistance tactics from direct action to counterinformation, from constituent practices to bioresistance. It also functions as a ‘user’s guide’ to social disobedience, encompassing hundreds of documentary elements spanning decades.”

Excited to have Service Works join us this Sunday at 1 pm for a final conversation to close 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕎𝕙𝕚𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕖𝕣𝕤, alongside Shadi Harouni and Michael Allan at Ditch Projects.

For the presentation of the Disobedience Archive in the exhibition, Service Works has conceived what the artist describes as an “appendicular support repository that gives access to information related to disobedience in general and the specific histories, lived experiences, and geopolitical conditions present in videos chosen to represent the Disobedience Archive.” It consists of a mobile unit and functional benches that contain bibliographical resources on the theme of disobedience while at the same time serving as viewing stations for the videos. Started in 2022 and facilitated by artist Brian Gillis, Service Works is described as “a speculative, semi-visible service platform that partners with a range of individuals and institutions to create access to socially relevant resources, opportunities, and information through relational art practice and social design.”
