hourly comic day 2026 ✶ part 1
i love hcd even though i don't really draw comics outside of it. i'm so glad it fell on a day where i wasn't just working so i actually had things to draw! i had em all sketched out yesterday and i'm chipping away at finishing them today because i have the time. i'm slow at drawing things outside of my usual wheelhouse, i'm slow with digital art because i don't use it much, but i'm getting it done and i'm having fun! i just need to do it in a way that's agreeable to my brain. i really do want to draw comics more, but the structure of A Day For It seems to be the only thing that gets my ass in gear for now. more as i finish them :)
there is life after death (but it’s not what you think)
✶
i’m very excited to announce that i'll be doing a solo exhibition at @slicevancouver aug 27-sept 1! the pieces are explorations of decay in nature and death as a return to the earth. this is my first solo art show!
throughout the coming months i’ll be sharing some of my process, sneak peeks of the works, and maybe some of what i’m learning in my research (there’s a lot that goes into rotting!) as a build this show into its final form. so follow along, and i hope to see you there this summer!
untitled (hare) • watercolour, lino print
this piece was part of the RED collective show at slice of life gallery, and i had a lot of fun making it! lino printing is a new medium for me and i’m really enjoying the process (although it was a little scary to print directly on top of the painting 😅).
thanks to everyone who came by for the show! i loved seeing everyone else’s work all together and meeting some of the artists at the opening.
extra big thanks to whoever bought the painting! ♥️ my first time selling an original! i had to pop by the gallery to see that little red sticker in person and say goodbye to my lil hare 🥹🐇
huge shoutout to the team at @slicevancouver for all their work! this show was going on at the same time as another show in the main gallery and culture crawl, and they crushed it!
i have some red hare skull lino prints in the slice gift shop, as well as some stickers. i’ll be making prints of this full piece in the future as well.
deer (at rest)
🌼MAY FLOWERS🌸
this collective show is the first time i’ve ever show a piece! it was really nice to see it up on the wall alongside all the other rad work. huge thanks to the @slicevancouver team for making it all happen! the show is up until wednesday, i’ve also got some original cyanotype prints for sale in the merch section.
a selection of shitty sketches from my shitty sketchbook ✨♥️
a little while ago i got this cheap sketchbook to help get myself out of a rut. executive dysfunction was kicking my ass and i wasn’t making anything. i feel good when i’m making things but my brain wouldn’t let me access that, even though it would help me feel better. i’m learning that when i’m really stuck sometimes changing my approach can help shake me out of it, so i gave myself limitations/structure:
- choose a few materials/colours before starting (the paper can’t handle wet media so that further limits what i can use)
- set a timer and draw ten minutes (drawing longer is fine, the goal is minimum 10 mins)
- aim for everyday, don’t feel bad about missing some
the short timer helps me get past my hesitations when laying down the first marks and lets me focus more on gesture over accuracy. “draw for ten minutes” feels much more approachable than “draw one sketchbook page”, so it’s easier for me to get started because it’s not an intimidating task, and using a low quality sketchbook keeps me from being precious about the whole thing. turns out making it low pressure was the best way to take pressure off myself.
highly recommended trying out something like this if drawing has started to feel too daunting!
and while generative ai is having a moment it is so SO important to make things with your own human hands and mind and with intentions and decisions. even if it’s shitty. let it be shitty, you learn something from making it regardless. the making IS the art.
i got this cheap little sketchbook and i’m gonna try doing a quick timed sketch every day! ✨ i’m imagining it’ll be mostly observational sketches, but we’ll see.
it’s been difficult to keep up a drawing/painting practise right now for a number of reasons, so my hope is to reduce the friction as much as i can to make the practise easier to start on lower energy days. i’m going to limit my materials and palette cut down on decision fatigue, and set a time for no more than 10 minutes. whether it’s a warmup or all i do for the day, i think it’ll be a good exercise.
ps: all these stickers (except stumpcone) are available at slice of life gift shop!
sloppy fast lines! messy smushed colour! no overthinking!!!
i’ve had pretty bad art block the last little while. it was nice enough out earlier today so i made myself go sit somewhere and draw what was in front of me without worrying about making it look good. helped a lot, honestly. (i was hoping to finish it in one sitting but the rain was coming back and i didn’t want to walk home in it.)
