“I have a rule that I’m trying to break myself out of, where it’s not a worthwhile song if I can’t just play it alone on a guitar for somebody and hold their attention. You know, that is a good way to write a pretty solid song, but also I feel like I might be depriving myself of the opportunity to make something more long-form or more based on like texture and sonics and melody than in lyrics. Usually, I can crank out a two and a half minute long song and hold some attention, but I also wonder if I’m sacrificing something by making it so accessible so quickly.”

There’s a pretty big psych scene in Australia. What do think it is about Australia that brings that out?
“It’s just way more psychedelic than America. There’s LSD in the water. We’ve got the jungle, we’ve got the bush, we’ve got the kangaroos. Once you get there, you’ll understand. It’s probably indigenous.”

“As I waited near the stage for the GWAR show to start, I saw an image that was a hint of the juvenile humor to come: sex dolls being thrown around in the crowd like beach balls.
A lot of people (myself included) are attracted to GWAR for their profane and elaborate performances, but I feel like their musicianship should be mentioned before I list off all the people they murdered. These guys sounded great and are incredibly tight live.”
