Tybee Business Spotlight: The Kelpie
Bringing a taste of the Scottish Highlands to the Lowcountry
In August of 2025, Tybee was fortunate to receive a new and novel contribution to its eclectic food scene. Owner and executive chef Gordon Card and his co-owner and wife Whitney opened The Kelpie bistro and pub, located next to the Chu’s Mart on 1st Street, bringing international flavors and unexpected fusions to the island. After serving as the executive chef at Bubba Gumbo’s and having also owned and operated various restaurants between Scotland and Savannah over time, Gordon decided it was time to bring a new culinary concept to our coastal community.

People & Plants: Explore Tybee Island Marine Science Center’s Coastal Cultures Exhibit
The marine science center’s ethnobotany exhibit examines the relationship between coastal Georgia’s Gullah Geechee community and the plantlife that sustains them.
Coastal Georgia boasts a unique ecology, a rich history, and cultural legacy that are indelibly intertwined — and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center examines these connections in their new ethnobotany exhibit. The science center collaborated with artist Mya Timmons to bring the exhibit to fruition, which includes a sizable mural painted by Timmons, plantlife specimens that she helped identify, and audio recordings featuring voices of the Timmons family, who are of Gullah Geechee lineage and have inhabited Coastal Georgia by way of Harris Neck for many generations.

In 2025, shorebird biologist with Manomet, Allie Hayser and colleagues ideated and executed the island’s inaugural Tybee Spring Shorebird Festival to raise awareness about and promote conservation efforts for the approximately 300,000 shorebirds that flock to our barrier isle during their migration season. With buy-in from the City of Tybee, the Tybee Island Maritime Academy, and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, which hosted last year’s events, the shorebird fest was born, attracting hundreds of attendees over the February 20–22 weekend.
