I may not post here often enough to garner much attention , but lately life has been bigger than words can contain. Today I write this tender story from a hospital room in Mexico City.
Back in September I tripped to UT and met a stunning lady pilot from BC with her two amazing boys. Their little Mazda easily outpaced my dilapidated Prius driving north together, stopping in Sun Valley and Leavenworth to snag some special late season flights. I drove through a snowstorm on bald Prius tires to spend my first Canadian (and vegan) Thanksgiving with her beautiful and blessed family, going back every chance I could get as the hollows of my tin heart filled with hope and belonging and mung bean omelets. This month I flew to Valle De bravo, Mexico with her and friends. For flying, of course.
The outcome of this trip has been beyond my wildest expectations.
My heart is heavy today with a cocktail of emotions not dissimilar in complexity to the pelvic operation being performed on Susan right this minute as we root for a shot at restoring her presently lost mobility. I've spent a humbling week at her bedside among waves of pain, relief, frustration, hope, and fear as the obfuscating process of obtaining insurance approval for medical treatment cast doubt on her chances of recovery with each passing day.
Today we find out with more absolution what her recovery will look like, and we sit on pins and needles for the verdict. She is in good hands with the best surgeon at ABC Santa Fe, and we have all the reassurance from a fleet of talented staff.
To anyone who feels called - this mama bird could use a boost. Raising two kids alone is tough, doing it from a state of hopefully temporary immobility will be tougher. I will thank you personally if you have a lump or two to toss in at her funding page:

If not, thanks for tuning into this update anyway and I hope you all are well. I'm still alive, sometimes kicking..
The Arak Air2 is out, and this previous generation demo wing needs a new home! It has less than 5 hours on it, in crispy new condition. This is the XS size, certified B, takeoff weight 65 to 90 kg, recommended take off weight 70 to 85 kg. It is an excellent hike and fly wing weighing only 3.1 kg. Normal retail is $4,400 so this has an excellent deal! When is available to demo around Bellingham / seattle. Also happy to ship the wing. Thanks @disclexic for playing wing model!
Not a single day has passed I don't miss this boy, and there comes a time every year when the pangs scrape a little sharper. I feel lucky to still trace our final steps as if they were yesterday and not four years ago, and I try not to let the lesson of loss overshadow the many tender ways I can thank Huck for enhancing my life. The lesson of loss is one that I appear to still be learning as I come to recognize the ways that life escapes us - from the smallest gestures to the most barbaric atrocities, every experience of loss becomes an opportunity to love. If one is brave enough. Fortunately for me and most who crossed his path, Huck made it real easy β€
