In an unsurprising, yet extremely disappointing outcome. The majority of the West Valley City council have sold out and voted to re-zone the neighborhood that has been a longtime home to the historic Redwood Drive-In Theaters and Swap Meet. Despite the incredible efforts made by the community and others who stood in solidarity with a strong unified voice, the city council chose to turn their backs for personal gain.
Even though this is totally on brand with how Utah politicians and local leaders bow down to developers in the tide of gentrification, it does not mean we have to roll over and accept it. We need to be loud and share our disappointment with them and their unethical relationship to Edge Homes. Maybe this will help them even feel a sliver of the discomfort they have created for the vendors and families who rely on the swap meet as a means of survival.
We should also do what we can to support and rally around those families who this will affect most. It is clear the city council does not care what happens to them. I truly hope we can work together to uplift the victims of gentrification in an act of sincere concern and defiance to the corruption we have witnessed.

The image of this sculpture is accompanied by a rose with 22 thorns - representing the short number of years Bernardo was allotted under this uncompassionate and overtly corrupt system.
