Delighted to announce the next Pete Fij single release. "Cuckoo" is out now on all streaming platforms, as well as available for download on Bandcamp and accompanied by an eye-catching video on YouTube.
“Cuckoo” leans into darker, more cinematic territory, inspired by espionage, coded language and neon-lit intrigue.
The song is actually rooted in deeply personal history. It draws on Pete's parents’ escape from behind the Iron Curtain - his father surviving deportation to Siberia before fleeing through Afghanistan, and his mother slipping out of Communist Poland using forged papers. That lived experience feeds into a lifelong fascination with the shadowy world of spies, double agents and secret codes.
Channeling the spirit of one of his favourite films - David Leitch's 2017 spy flick Atomic Blonde’s set in late ’80s Berlin - “Cuckoo” plays like a stylised pop thriller: Siouxsie Sioux behind the getaway wheel, Phil Oakey peering through a telescopic sight, and lyrics constructed almost entirely from espionage terminology — gradually scrambled into a code of their own as the song unfolds.
"Cuckoo" is the third single from the debut solo album, "Up's The New Down", released on Tip Top Recordings on 10th July 2026.
