Before BLUE and 1192, when weezer was just an unknown, unsigned band with a tiny local following, I was an inexperienced kid, in way over my head, trying, but failing to get our band from point A (nowhere) to point B (somewhere, anywhere and fast.)
Everything changed for us when I had the extraordinary blind luck of meeting Joe Chiccarelli. Joe, who was already a recording icon by ‘92, only had to listen to about 90 seconds of No One Else before becoming our most enthusiastic and tireless advocate.
Through his connections we sent every major record label in Los Angeles and New York our wonky sounding 4-song cassette and when they passed (and they all passed), Joe would call them up to find out why and they would just tell him “Joe, there are just no songs here” and he would subtly reply “Are you fucking crazy!?!?”
Joe continued to believe in us even after everyone in the music industry told him he was dead wrong. He kept on fighting for us until he finally got these songs into the hands and sympathetic ears of Todd Sullivan at Geffen records.
It was one of the great privileges and possibly the most full circle moment of my creative life to be in
@eastweststudios watching the man that discovered weezer have the last word and final mix on the very same recordings that brought us together and launched us from absolutely nowhere to somewhere, somewhere unimaginable.
So, this one’s for Joe and for all of you that have been so kind and so generous to all of us for so long.
