Elia Kazan, the director of the play "Death of Salesman," once wrote to the cast about a crucial aspect of their performance. He emphasized that each actor had a significant responsibility to create something unique and important before they even stepped on stage. This essential element was not something visible to the audience but was a part of the actors' preparation and character development.
Kazan believed that the actors needed to develop the spines of their characters, including their attitudes towards people and situations, inner pains, joys, and other unconscious aspects of their characters. He considered this pre-stage preparation crucial for setting the tone and creating an authentic performance that would resonate with the audience.
Lenore DeKoven, the author of "CHANGING DIRECTION," is advocating for directors to gain a deeper understanding of the actor's process by experiencing some of the basic actors' training exercises. She believes that directors and actors share the same goal of recreating human behavior, but directors must do it on a larger scale.
By going through some of the basic training exercises that actors use to prepare for their roles, directors can gain a better understanding of the physical and emotional demands that actors face. This understanding can help directors communicate more effectively with their actors and create a more collaborative and productive working environment.
An important point to consider is that Ang Lee, who directed "Brokeback Mountain," wrote the foreword to Lenore DeKoven's book "CHANGING DIRECTION". Lee himself mentions in the foreword that he took DeKoven's directing class.
