Dion Prints uses photo-based media to create visually profound and intricate compositions through scannography, painting and collage. She explores the nuances of the communities she belongs to and grew up in as she navigates her own individuality. As a Black artist, she aims to showcase Black Canadian culture in its natural, purest and joyful form. Dion Prints addresses the material afterlife of photography. Cutting, masking, and saturating her images, she plays with absence and distortion, and treats the photographic surface as something to be worked, damaged, and reassembled; what’s left is ethereal and solemn, tender and full of emotional resonance.
Find more of @dionprints ’ work in Issue 3.5 of Bootlegger Magazine, coming soon 🛠️
Quitting school gave me space to focus on what I truly love: making art. Through that decision, I found my purpose and built a career that keeps growing in ways I never imagined.
Since then, my work has been exhibited in Montreal, Nigeria, Toronto, and Ottawa, and I’ve been able to support myself through my creative practice and even investing in the tools I need to keep creating.
If you’re in Ottawa, you can catch my work at:
Ottawa Art Gallery – on view until October 19th Vernissage: October 16 from 6-8:30PM
SPAO – on view until November 16th
Vernissage: October 17th from 5:30-8PM
Sometimes, taking the unconventional path leads you exactly where you’re meant to be.

OLOKUN 🌊
This project reimagines Olokun, the Yoruba deity of the sea, wealth, and mystery—an often overlooked figure in Nigerian mythology. Inspired by the legend of King Ewuare’s journey to Olokun’s underwater palace of cowrie shells, the work honors ancestral narratives while weaving in spiritual symbols like the Christian and Pan-African crosses. These elements bridge diverse belief systems, highlighting shared threads across cultures. Warm, muted tones create a sense of softness and safety, inviting reflection. Through Olokun, I aim to spark dialogue around interconnected faiths and offer a visual space for exploring heritage, spirituality, and the depth of collective memory.
