Check out this drawing of this short-scale (Mk II) 8-string Fender 400 owned by @dijeres …I think the color fits the season and found it challenging to keep the drawing dynamic while still being true to its darkness. Super beautiful guitar.
Juan Carlos told me a little bit about his guitar:
“…I’m not entirely sure of the exact date — these are notoriously hard to pin down — but mid-60s should be close enough. The electronics are stock, and the pickup is an 8-string Jaguar pickup, the type Fender used on these guitars back in the day.
I bought it in July 2024 from @gruhnguitars in Nashville, TN. It had previously belonged to Fred Newell (who played with Waylon Jennings, among others) and had been modded to a 3×4 setup. The guitar came with an extra pedal, which I soon added to make it a 4×4 (Pedal 4 lowers B to Bb). Aside from the lever modifications, I upgraded the tuners to new Klusons — a definite improvement over the originals. The pedal and lever arrangement was already set up in the Day configuration, so I stuck with it. “
Juan Carlos is a guitar player and record producer from Santa Cruz, Costa Rica — a small rural town in Central America. He’s been playing guitar for about 30 years and took up pedal steel just last year, which now takes most of his time outside the studio.
“I fell in love with the pedal steel many years ago, and playing one had long been on my bucket list. That time finally came when I found myself in Nashville on vacation and decided it was something I truly wanted to pursue. I headed to the shops, not realizing you couldn’t just buy a steel the way you buy a Strat! Luckily, the folks at Gruhn Guitars had one in the back that hadn’t yet made it to the sales floor — and it ended up flying home with me to Santa Cruz.
Though still relatively new to the instrument, I’ve been invited to guest on several tracks by local bands over the past year, and have also played on a few TV ads.”
