Osariemen ~ god’s gift.
A name given to me, by my grandmother.
A proud Benin/Edo woman.
Through her I grew up hearing stories, told and untold
about the people, culture and history of Benin City.
With pride and care she made sure these stories were passed on.
Over time, this foundation grew through my own curiosity,
by personal interest, research, asking questions and
by having conversations with others connected to this heritage.
I believe I was given the gift of creation,
by being an artist to continue this passing on.
To translate heritage into something visible, tangible and alive.
As a child of the diaspora, with both Surinamese and Nigerian roots,
I now present a part of my heritage in the form of a coloring book:
“The Kingdom of Benin.”
This book is an invitation to connect to history, culture and to creativity.
To learn, to reflect and to color stories that deserve to be remembered.
So excited to finally share this: 📘📖
